The level of competition for places in the Hurricanes playing squad continues to intensify with head coach Chris Boyd admitting there were some tough decisions made before he finalised his combinations to face the Lions at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night.

Boyd has made four changes to the starting side which beat the Sunwolves 43-15 in the last Investec Super Rugby round.

The return of Ngani Laumape from a week's break has seen the in-form Vince Aso move out of the 23-man squad, a decision Boyd found difficult given just how well the versatile back was playing in 2018.

However, Boyd stressed that Aso would be right back in the mix as the Hurricanes negotiate a difficult few weeks before the international playing window.

Laumape's return is the only change in the backs but there have been three made up front where prop Jeff Toomaga-Allen swaps places for Ben May.

There has been a similar switch in the loose forwards where Gareth Evans comes in for Reed Prinsep while Vaea Fifita returns to the second row after a week off.

The only other alteration to the match-day 23 comes in the reserves with Ihaia West coming in for Jackson Garden-Bachop.

Nehe Milner-Skudder, who made a welcome return to rugby in the last quarter of the Sunwolves match, will again come off the bench.

Saturday's match, a repeat of the 2016 Super Rugby final, as well as last year's semifinal, will be significant for centre Matt Proctor who will make his 50th appearance for the Hurricanes.
ShadowTrooper

Welcome back NMS - but no place for in-form Aso? Jeez...

Rotation, it's a thing - esp with the riches of the Canes backs!

Here's the reason:

Bones

Not a bad replacement I guess.

Bones

A looong passage of play. Ends with guess who dropping it...

It's so annoying how reliable he is at knocking on. Good luck to Eddie Jones in teaching that out of him

Bones

@tordah it's weird he seemed to have turned a corner earlier in the season. Now the toasters are back well and truly. Still, he's probably no worse than ol' RM at that.

antipodean

Riccitelli with a hungus. Pass inside and they'd be two tries up.

Rancid Schnitzel

NMS looking sharp.

Bones

This ref doesn't seem very good...

Bones

@rancid-schnitzel ya reckon? He seems standoffish I reckon. Would like to see him run with the ball... Seems to be doing everything but.

Bones

Oh jules. Just how?

Stargazer

No, way that was backwards. Canes are lucky there.

He's getting involved and showing some nice touches.

When you read this message, what the time on the clock? I feel I’m a way behind.

@gt12 7.55 pm NZT

antipodean

That wouldn't happen Riccitelli if you stepped back inside you fat moron.

Stargazer

@gt12 Duh, yeah, :man_facepalming_medium_skin_tone:

Bones

@antipodean yeah he doesn't seem to like the thought of keeping the ball alive. Followed up by equally dumb play from Evans.

antipodean

@bones Yeah that effort by Evans speaks volumes to intellect. I suppose every team needs the big blokes who don't think too much...

Toddy

Why not just penalise white when they've come from the side, instead of shouting at them to move out.

antipodean

Brilliant by Proctor. That's the difference between centres and hookers...

gt12

Hmm? No comments?

Cracking try, set up well by Proctor.

Edit: hit refresh gt12.

KiwiMurph

Beaudy goal kicking very well in the conditions.

Rancid Schnitzel

That Comlink or whatever his name is, is a really shit defender. Canes up by 14 but both tries were due to his shit defending.

Stargazer

I had noticed the weird hair cut from Jantjies before, but what on earth has he growing on his chin?

I don't think he's growing it, I think it's growing him

Bones

Best defensive centre in NZ with a cracking attacking play...

KiwiMurph

@bones Rob Thomas would have scored it himself

Bones

@kiwimurph that centres combination of is what dreams are made of.

Seriously, Is it his time?

He’s basically a less breakable Ngatai and he’s only 25.

Bones

Funniest line from Nisbo "now he looks to link up!"

It was Ardie Savea. No he doesn't.

Rancid Schnitzel

RR isn't that good is he? No way he should be an AB.
