I have a new pet hate. Blockers running in front of the ball carrier.
Have you noticed every time the Lions have the ball, a blocker will run at a right angle across the line of the ball carrier deliberately shielding their path. WTF good are the AR's if they don't pick this kind of negative play up?

The Landers scrum is very weak.

Good win in the end. But could have put a lot more on them if they were on their game.

FABRT is underrated. Like a more dynamic Crotty.

Coltman, Franklin, Whitelock, Hammington and Matchbox with huge games. Walden a very mercurial game, some absolute hair tearing moments mixed with some sweet touches, more of the former though.

Refereeing was all over the show.

Dickson made a very good cameo.

Happy to get that win with A Smith out. We look lethal when outsides get ball. Whitelock had a a big game but overall The forwards have gone backwards. Don't think it's coaching just wear and tear of the combative style they play with very little turnover in personal overvthe years. That forward pack that finished though, geeze wldnt wantbtgem on the field for too long.

The laws state that:

A player offside under Law 10.4c cannot be put onside by any action of an opponent, apart from a charge down.

Except if an opponent intentionally touches the ball (which is the same thing).

10.4 c relates to the 10m law, which is not the case here. However that's not really relevant here.

What do you think of the idea that the opponent put himself there deliberately (I.e., is a lazy runner?) in that case could you interpret it to be play on? Or, penalize the retiring player?

What I’m asking is, what would you do?

As the TMO I think I'd do what the TMO did. He didn't intentionally play the ball. The lions player is subject to PK for interfering in the play, but it's a stretch to say his action of merely being there qualifies as putting Smith onside in terms of the law you quoted.

Blame the law if you like, but I don't think there is any option here.

Willie Lose thought he was in touch (which makes me think I'm probably wrong).

@damo the only thing for me was he was watching that ruck while running back. I don't think Hammington intentionally passed it into him, but you see guys getting up on the wrong side of the ruck penalised in similar circumstances all the time.

Thanks. As our resident ref, I was interested in your thoughts. I’m not sure that there are any problems with the law (that wasn’t my point), and I assume that the ref could have got around them anyway if they ruled that the player put themselves there to interfere with play.

Problem being that the Lions boofhead purposefully stopped an attacking phase 15 metres out. Lazy running.

Had the ball not rebounded to bender it was a straight penalty and reasonable yellow card.

That the refs patently had no idea how to adjudicate this rare situation is understandable but not recognising the professional foul doesn't fill with confidence.

Substandard refereeing by all.

Similarly when the Lions winger tried to rescue a ball on the touchline only to fling it miles forward, the gathering Lions player was acres offside yet the apparent theatre of it all seemed to distract all referees and assistants and only a scrum for the forward throw was adjudicated.

I know this rule from the abortion that was the last minutes of a recent British Lions series. It had to be a penalty.

I'm sceptical that we're not teaching referees to play what's in front of them. Although Gardiner usually has some feel for the game and is one of the best.

Wasn't Lose talking about a different scenario there? That was the one where the 'Landers took the quick throw and Thompson screwed up in midfield passing to Sopoaga?
