@Canes4life That link goes to a 404 page at the moment. Maybe they're making a change to the squad?

Canes4life

@Stargazer looks to be working again, and no changes to the squad.

Canes4life

@Stargazer actually there was, Chicago Doyle comes onto the bench for Louis Northcott who may have been pulled because he’s playing in the Jubilee Cup final this weekend.

For who can't go to the game:

Stargazer

Two early tries to Wellington. The first scored by Sione Halalilo and the second by Keelan Whitman after a great break by Losi Filipo.

12 - 0 to Wellington after 10 minutes.

Stargazer

Ha, great fend from one of the SC players on Solomona Sakalia, who goes to ground ..

Stargazer

You know in advance who'll win in these games, but I really like how competitive these Heartland teams are. They really throw everything at it.

Stargazer

Driving maul try to Asafo Aumua. Not converted by Morgan.

17 - 0 to Wellington after 23 minutes.

Canes4life

Aumua in again, Morgan converts. 24-0.

Stargazer

Another driving maul try to Aumua. Converted by Morgan.

24 - 0 to Wellington after 26 and half minutes.

Stargazer

Next try scored by Losi Filipo. He deserved that one. One of the better backs in this game. PU-J very quiet thus far.

Stargazer

Converted.

31 - 0 Wellignton with 32 minutes on the clock.

Stargazer

Paula Fifita scores for South Canterbury! Great try!

Stargazer

It's getting very windy, but the try is converted.

31 - 7 Wellington. Three minutes to go in this half.

Canes4life

@Stargazer long phase of play by South Canterbury but they hardly advanced a metre. Wellington defense has been strong but running into this wind must be difficult.

Canes4life

Aumua in for a hattrick off a lineout drive to close the half.

Canes4life

Isi Saumaki and TJ Clarke in for two quick tries after the half.

Bird has gone off, big Pettett comes on.

Canes4life

Aumua in for another, that's four tries for him now.

Delany having a fine game setting up that try.

Morgan misses another, maybe he should give the kicking tee to TJ Clarke.

55-7 to Wellington. 48 mins gone.

Canes4life

Making their debuts James Douglas comes on for Aumua and Chicago Doyle comes on for Losi Filipo.

Logan Henry has also come on for Preston.

Canes4life

I've been really disappointed by Aiden Morgan. His passing game hasn't been accurate at all.

Winger

Not a good look for Logan Henry. Only a reserve after one game

Canes4life

Sam Clarke looking a lot better than Aiden Morgan.

Canes4life

@Winger he's been solid without being spectacular. I really like the look of Anthony Pettett, who's bigger than Hugo. I think he has a slightly higher workrate aswell.

Both Pettett and Plummer will be playing for Super contracts this year. Plummer is just under 2m and Pettett is slightly over, they are both young aswell (around 23 I think).

Pettett is an interesting one, he came through the Wellington Academy with Taine Plumtree and Naitoa Ah Koui but then had a 2 year break after falling out of love with the game. He came back this year and has been starring for Johnsonville in Wellington Club rugby. He's the type of lock the Canes should be locking down. Tall, big, young and has a high work-rate.

Canes4life

South Canterbury in for their third try. 67-21 to Wellington into the 79th minute.

Canes4life

And the ref calls fulltime. Wellington defend the Shield 67-21.

South Canterbury reserve no 8 Siu Kakala should have started ..what a beast poor old Logan Henry won’t want to look at the video

Winger

Stuff had Filipo as their MVP

Stargazer

@Winger Filipo was really good in this game. Definitely the best back.

Have to say mate, didn't see whole game, but what I did, thought young Plummer looked pretty ok. I have seen you mention him before, and will try and keep an eye on him this uear as a bit of extra interest type thing!

I think Pettett is quite a bit north of 23 - but can't find confirmation...

Canes4life

@foobaNZ could be 24 then, he apparently came through the academy the same time as Ah Koui and Plumtree so must be a simialr age to them.

Stargazer

Pettett was in the Hurricanes U18 training camp in 2014; he was a year 13 student at the time. So he would probably have been 17 or 18 in 2014. That's 26 or 27 in 2023. Same age brackett as Asafo Aumua and Pepesana Patafilo, who were also in that same Hurricanes U18 training camp (among others).

Canes4life

@Stargazer oh there you go then, maybe the article I read was inaccurate. He did take two-three years out of the game though so it's good to see him back and playing well.

Yea he went to Newlands college, but I think he got there a few years after I left, so my math told me he must be late 20s.

He's a big lad for sure. Hopefully he gets higher honours.

I've seen him play on the wing before. Looked promising but always looked more suited to the midfield to me. But he's unlikely to get much game time there with Wellington. Even on the wing unless there are injuries

Maybe his past would put other teams off but he needs more game time to show if he's good enough in tougher games at this level.

With Blackwell still to return Plummer might not get many starts unless there are injuries

Stargazer

@Winger Especially with Bird playing so well. He looked like a man unleashed after sitting way too much time on the Canes' bench or in the stands. Huge workrate and very dominant. IMO best forward of the game, despite Aumua scoring 4 tries (3 were driving maul tries, so team tries; the other one was awesome). Whitman was also good btw.
