it does make you wonder when HB were playing as well as they did, why they then shut up shop and play the clock down you run the risk of exactly that happening.

Agree. But perhaps Mabey was wanting to add to the drama for it to be the last play

That was a totally fucking stupid penalty given away by the captain!
Hawke's Bay needed to keep working their way towards the sideline at the end, so even if they gave away a penalty, the kick would've been a lot more difficult to make, especially for a left footer.
