Confused strategy, cowardly, dimwitted selection all compounded by a lack of joy. They really don’t seem to be having fun - relishing the chance to play in an England shirt in front of their countrymen. Perhaps all the back room departures is colouring my impression. But I doubt it.

They had the World Champs by the throat at the half - you woulda thought they’d have come out of the changerooms breathing fire. But they didn’t. In fact, every big moment it was the boks who showed more intensity and passion.

As the ref gilt edged the chances gifted by Bok inaccuracy, it was the boks who got fired up. England, almost disdainful of their desperate fans’ urging, were more interested in begging the ref for yet more help.

All of this was exemplified two minutes from time. Needing two scores they turned the ball over in their 22 and kicked it out. @Dodge & @Catogrande please tell your wives that there are bunch of internet strangers who say that you were well within your rights to throw your teacups through the tv.

I don't get all the hate on here for Itoje. he is a very good player and has been consistently for a number of years. Yeah he had a shit game today but that alone does not make him a shit player.

Anyway, back to the game.. There just seems to be a lack of structure to England's game. Have these guys actually met each other before? It doesn't seem that way.

Someone else on here said that the scoreline flattered England and I would agree. If you take Smith out of the equation we would have been embarrassed on the scoreboard. All the good stuff we did in attack, pretty much, was down to his more off the cuff play. Everything else we were doing was just the same thing with no real variation. The mouthy little twat Healey called it - just one off runners hitting it up with no pop passes or distribution options, meaning that the Bok defence could just gang tackle and the jackal.

As for the substitutions and yeah, we don't have access to all the player data but, we again substitute Martin when he was by far our best 2nd row on the day. Has it been pre-decided that Itoje is an 80 minute man and Martin is only a 65 minute man? It seems so. Underhill was our best forward and got hooked off first and he didn't look off the pace at all at that time..

This is really taking me back to the bad old days of Andy Robinson's reign except that Borthwick has some decent cattle.

We all have our players that have less than attractive traits, sometimes I wonder if it is part of their designated job. For Itoje it certainly seemed that way under Eddie.

Borthwick has to go. Just has too. Get a confident, established coach and let him build a coaching set up I might actually have heard of. Our defence is as bad as I can ever remember it, and our structured attack non existent.

Reading between the lines, Jones left because of borthwicks autocratic style. Do you think borthwick can learn from this, or is he too dictatorial ? England have a long history of sacking coaches at just the wrong time. The team are not far off being really good.

I’ve heard that Borthwick is paranoid, worried about losing his job and therefore a control freak. He’s the wrong man. The team look good in patches as they have some decent cattle (all be it were really short in the front row and in the centres), but the defence shows that the players don’t understand what the coaches want from them, my guess is that the coaches don’t understand either

Remembering those days when Borthwick was playing and all you heard was stuff like how technically good he was and what a good lineout caller he was. Very little was said about how ineffectual he was as a player given his physical gifts.

For England... another loss that I'm sure hurts.
But, I really don't think England are very far off the pace. They just seem to miss a little something than when they find it, I believe will click them into gear. For what it's worth, I thought Underhill was colossal. How he isn't in every match 23 is beyond me.

A question for @Dodge and @Catogrande and every other poster that watches English rugby closely:
Is this not the time for England rugby to adopt the approach of picking players even if they don't play in the Premiership?
Will that really undermine the England club game that much?

If Borthwick were to get the sack, who would you want as England coach?

Earl has done very well playing out of position. He’s very small for an 8 and lacks a bit of heavyweight punch. He’s made good ground with his speed and footwork to be sure but doesn’t have that extra when the speed etc gets nullified. He’s more of a natural 7 and let’s not forget that he became England’s 8 by accident when Borthwick only took one 8 to the World Cup - the washed up Billy V and was forced into making the change.

OK, first question. In truth there aren’t that many playing abroad that would realistically be in contention. Jack Willis, Henry Arundell and Farrell. The former two stayed over in France due to being overlooked and or messed around by England and Farrell’ issues are fairly clear, plus he’s near the end of his International career. I can’t think of too many more tbh.

Second question. I think we’re stuck with Borthwick for the 6N but we need to be looking around for a replacement. Just who that may be is another matter. We seem to completely bugger up the timing in looking for our coaches, always looking desperately around because we’ve hung on too long and missed opportunities to secure good, proven International coaches. Hence my view of sticking with Borthwick for another 6 months of so.

@Catogrande surely Farrell would love to return home?

Farrell at 12 is done, he’s not enough of a threat with ball in hand and he doesn’t run off Smith’s shoulder. Lawrence should be 12 but our 13 also needs to carry more threat, there are a few around like Northmore at Quins who deserve a run.

Don’t know who could come in as coach now but assuming we haven’t pissed off and insulted F Jones beyond redemption I’d love him to have a go. My conspiracy theory head says that’s why we wouldn’t release him from his contract…

No, I think he should be in the 23, and probably in the XV instead of Curry at this stage - I’ll be honest, I’ve never been much good at identifying the best 6 / 7s. Think we need CCS as he’s the best ball carrier in the tight, think Earl has to be in the back row and then am never sure who’s the best 7 out of Underhill and Curry.

Makes sense from what I have seen - CCS + Earl.
Then you have the luxury of staring either of Curry or Underhill and having the other off the bench.
For me, Underhill could cover 6 & 7

I think CCS should be able to cover 6 and 8, but his hands and skills aren't good enough for 8 yet. Earl and Curry have both played 6, 7 and 8. Underhill covers 6 and 7. Problem is we keep picking Dombrandt on the bench. I like AD against tired defences playing off Smith's shoulder, but our team aren't strong enough to carry a lack of grunt, good in the loose, ball playing 8 at the moment.
