I think the difference for this version of Tiger is that he has finally accepted his physical limitations and is playing the percentages. Pre back repair, a couple of birdies and he would be trying to hit booming drives and get wild, now he is being outdriven by the young bucks but is a good enough all round player to get through.

If that is true he is even more dangerous now. Who would bet against him going on a majors tear if his body continues to hold up?

It was the biggest example of the pressure he brought to bear on the rest of the field. Molinari felt it, and you saw what happened. When he chunked that short hop into the water on 15? I thought that's the kind of shot I'd hit!

To be fair, it hit a pine Cone. I don't think he really chunked it too much. Had it missed the tree, it was on the green to two putt for par.

RS are just talking to Phillip Tautaurangi and they replayed the chat they had with him last week, and it was here I heard that bit about the rank of players to win...apparently it worked out player on rank 12.7 or so usually wins it, Tiger was 12th leading in, but PT said but I wont pick him to win....

Spieth's Amen Corner collapse and No Name Danny Willett winning still surpasses it for me. Molinari had the advantage going onto 12 but it was a small lead.

Will Tiger win again? It's hard to say given how many times he hasn't won in the last few years - there are lots of players now who have a single major and have been close numerous times. Day, Fowler etc. The difference this time was that Tiger held it together this time whereas he has crumbled in the past. He got away with some terrible drives at the Masters where he wasn't punished for his waywardness - at other courses (especially the US Open) a wayward drive can mean an automatic bogey. I think Tiger is now as good as a number of other players - is he necessarily better than them as he used to be? Not sure on that one and with so many competitive players around, who can predict the next major?

guess the question could also be: do the other players believe Tiger is back, cos it was the intimidation factor that got them previously, you look at the on course scoreboard updates that were not where Tiger was and the roar of the crowds when they saw him get a birdie or move up, crowds love him, and seems they love him more than all the other players...will that play on peoples minds?

I would like him to equal Nicklaus, but not pass him, but like you, unsure if he will get there.

Next couple of Majors are on courses he has dominated on, so will be interesting, I expect his odds of him getting another major this year have shortened hugely.

It wasn't the all-time best finish I've seen, only because the Masters has a habit of producing amazing back 9s most years.

The threesomes killed it a bit, plus the fact that really Tiger was the only one charging in the last 4-5 holes while others faultered.

I loved the year Charl Schwartzel won, birdying the last four holes. Jason Day was charging, Adam Scott was charging, seem to remember Cabrera was there too.

Rose vs Garcia a few years ago was also fantastic, as was Scott vs Cabrera. Drama right up to the final putt.

@taniwharugby The thing in Tiger's favour is the locations of the two remaining US majors - Bethpage and Pebble, where he has won in the past.

His edge on the younger players is his 20+ years of accumulated knowledge at these courses. At Augusta it counts far more than elsewhere, but it will still give him an advantage at both of those courses I'd think.

Tiger is a cultural icon and these youngsters, the country club 20-year-olds, that are flooding IG and twitter wondering what the big deal is, makes me sick. These are the guys saying "espn cover someone else!" during the gameplay. When the vast majority want to see Tiger. I like Koepka, Finau and many others but its all about Tiger when he's in contention.

If you don't like a comeback then you don't like sports. Simple.

The approaching tornado made it more like a final round of The Open on a windy links course so "a charge" was extremely hard in those conditions. Again, Tiger's experience was invaluable.

The Open this year is at Royal Portrush in Antrim, Northern Ireland for the first time in 68 years. I expect it to be very windy indeed and for the local crowd to be extremely partisan in their support of Rory McIlroy.

At different points of that back 9 a number of very good players were having a run at Tiger. Johnson was coming until he faltered. Fowler went on a run but missed a putt by a mm. Finau played great but was too far back. Koepka was right there but just could not make the step up. But Tiger was just never coming back to them. He hit great shot after great shot. Hit his putts. He really played fucking good golf to win that.

I totally agree. There were about half a dozen players legitimately in the mix to win right up until the last couple of holes. Just because it wasn't an all out birdie fest didn't make it any less compelling. When Tiger embraced his son I suddenly noticed how dusty the lounge was. Must leave a strongly worded note for the cleaner....
