2018 School Rugby

In less than 3 weeks, the inaugural World Schools Rugby Festival kicks off in Paarl, South Africa (2-7 April 2018).

The list of NZ schools that will play at this tournament has constantly changed since the news of the new tournament broke in August last year.

The media were, at the time, talking about invitations being sent to 25 New Zealand schools, including Mount Albert Grammar, Christchurch Boys' and Wellington College. Also in August, it was reported that invitations had been accepted by Napier Boys Highs School, Otago Boys High School and Auckland's King's College.

In November, the South African media were saying Hamilton Boys’ High, Christchurch Boys’ High, Otago Boys’ High and Napier Boys’ High would participate.

On 3 March, the Otago Daily Times reported that Otago BHS had pulled out of the tournament due to the water shortages in Cape Town:

The Otago Boys’ High School First XV has pulled out of the inaugural world schools tournament in South Africa because of severe water shortages in Cape Town.
Otago Boys’ rector Richard Hall sent a brief press release yesterday explaining the decision.

"Due to concerns regarding the safety of our school touring party, the board of trustees regretfully decided to cancel the South African rugby tour," he wrote.

"Concerns were in regard to the Cape Town water crisis, particularly its scarcity."

Hall wrote the team was unable to change its travel plans and there was an issue around travel insurance. It was felt the risk was "too high" to go through with the planned tour.

I haven't seen any further news, but from the draw below it appears that only Napier BHS and Christchurch BHS will make the trip.

I have enjoying reading this series in the SST. This is part 3 in today's newspaper. @Stargazer @Nepia Part 2 was about the rise of Hastings.

I hadn't realised that St Kents had enticed Tasesa Lavea from Kings to replace his brother as the 1st XV coach.

The World Schools Festival games will be livestreamed via https://www.netwerk24.com/ (a news network in Afrikaans). There is no direct link to a page yet, but I read somewhere else it wil be streamed on Facebook, Youtube and possibly Twitter.

I'll post the link when I find it. By the way, the time difference with SA is now 10 hours.

Napier BHS has lost it's first game of the World School Festival to Boland Landbou 26 - 59 (4T - 9T). (HT: 7 - 26)
Napier's try scorers were Sam Henderson 2x, Angus Kilmister & Pereiha Hubbard. Conversions: Kegan Christian-Goss 3x. Yellow card: Frank Lochore.

I understand from the commentators that it was very hot (over 30 degrees). The local school (literally from down the road), Boland Landbou, had some very fast running backs and also some very good, strong forwards. Different from what the result suggests, Napier played reasonably well. They were strong at the breakdown, showed good line-running and used the width of the field well (particularly in the 2nd half). However, their line-outs didn't go well at all (leading to turnovers), and sometimes ball handling let them down, which resulted in a few intercept tries to their opponents.

The fact that SA schools are at the end (?) of their season, while the school rugby season in NZ yet has to start, was clearly visible. The South Africans were considerably less tired than the boys from Napier (the weather may have had something to do with that as well) and their combinations worked better.

All four matches on the opening day went the way of the South African teams, racing to an 8-0 lead in the "Oakland Cup” - a Ryder Cup-style contest between South Africa and the rest of the world. The format ensures that each match counts, where two points will count towards a win and a draw is worth one point.

Napier Boys’ High lay down the gauntlet with a haka before kick-off and Monnas accepted the challenge within the spirit of the game.

The New Zealand side bounced from their 59-26 defeat to Boland Landbou a few days ago producing a match that embodies the rivalry between two of the world’s biggest rugby nations.

Napier led 17-15 at the break with Monnas finding the edge in the second half to edge out the New Zealanders in an enticing dual.
