The Open

Great win by Xander. So in control in that back 9, looked every bit the champion.

Love the pace of this major, testing players in all conditions. Can you survive in the wet? Can you beat the wind? Great now go out and get it on Sunday. Xander had all the gears.

Canes4life

@barbarian a solid top 20 placing for Daniel Hillier aswell which was awesome to see.

My guess is 04? Todd Hamilton, Micheel, Woods at Augusta, but maybe that was a year Retief won the US? Long time ago though.

I'll post the answer as this thread will go quiet soon. 1982 amazingly enough. And in 1994, no American won a major (Price x 2, Els & Olazabal)

barbarian

82, wow! That's incredible.

Won a few bucks with Dan Hillier finishing inside the Top 20 so pretty happy with that. Also had Swede Alex Noren to finish inside the Top 20 as well.
What a year it's been for Xander. Started the year with no majors, now has two. He's had 12 Top 10 finishes in the 17 tournaments he has played this year including the majors.

Higgins

Ryan Fox carving up today - six under after fourteen holes after starting on par has him currently running in second overall. Still a lot of players to get their third rounds started though.

Tim

@Higgins That's brilliant stuff. Tuning in.

In the last group on the final day. Not bad

sparky

Ryan Fox two behind the leader going into the last round and playing in the last pair.

Huge opportunity tomorrow to bring The Open Auld Claret Mug back to NZ for the first time since Bob Charles in 1963.

Foxy had an insane round last night. His putter was hot and rewarded him for playing some pretty aggressive golf.

Let’s also not forget Kazuma Kobori. He’s T11 after shooting 3 under last night. Doesn’t hit the ball far but very accurate in to greens and it’s been paying off for him.

Go well lads!

Nicely set up for Ryan Fox

sparky

A bogey on the 11th makes it harder for Fox. 2 off the lead with six to play.

sparky

Back to back birdies for Ryan Fox. He shares the lead with 4 to play.

sparky

Fox drops a shot on 15th. One off the lead in joint 2nd with 3 tough holes to play. Set for his best ever Majors finish.

Cam Young's club house lead of -9 might be enough to win this.

sparky

Fox birdies the 16th to have a share of the lead with 2 to play in the 154th edition of The Open!

sparky

Ryan Fox shares the lead with one hole to play.

A birdie on the 18th and he's the champion.

sparky

What a tee shot!!!

The force is strong in this family.

sparky

What a second shot. 10 feet from the hole.

Wow!

Huge flash backs to his Dad lining up that kick at Lancaster Park to tame the Lions in 1993.

Ryan needs his father's composure now

So proud of him whatever though. What a guy!

BerniesCorner

His play over the last 1/2 hour unbelievable.

Sam Burns misses the opportunity to tie the clubhouse lead.

Ryan Fox now to win The Open.

Be proud, New Zealand, be proud!

BerniesCorner

Like father like son

So glad I woke up for this! Amazing

sparky

One of the great New Zealand sporting moments.

Ryan Fox hits 10 under to win The Open.

The first Kiwi to win the Auld Claret Jug since Bob Charles in 1963.

sparky

I love the modesty of his celebrations.

No arrogance about him as you would expect from someone who grew up around All Blacks legends.

MajorStokes

Balls on that bloke. Unreal victory.

The greatest two round comeback in Majors history.
