That was quite a finish - the way he played 18 will go down in Kiwi sporting legend. He was really unlucky on 15 when he was inches off the perfect line, went into the bunker and ended up under the lip so had to hit out backwards - just dropping one shot was very solid. And he plays so fast, just plays the shots, wonderful

What an achievement this morning. Not only does Ryan receive the biggest payday of his career he also receives a 5 year exemption into all of the other majors plus automatic exemption into The Open until he turns 55.

Taking on one of.the toughest holes on the course, actually going for the win and not just a play-off, balls of steel.
"I did say to my caddie on the tee that we were going to take it on, that I was going to try to win the tournament, and I'd live with the consequences if I stuffed it up," said Fox, who had never previously finished in the top 10 at a major in 28 attempts.
"To go out there and execute that drive, which is not a very comfortable tee shot, and to hit it in the fairway and give myself a chance was huge."
An NZ punter had $1500 on Foxy at $151 before the start of the tournament. They cashed out after round 2 when Fox was 52nd or whatever, for a measly $200...
Couple of others kept the faith with their $200 and $400 wagers respectively, collecting $30k and $60k.

dont follow the golf that much, but i do watch a particular american comedic-informative sports show regularly
their golf expert (Mark Schlabach ESPN) was asked to nominate the winner in an Open preview
he named three players for the win, and Fox was one of them
said fox's game suited the course, or something like that

Just watched the highlights of the final round. Fox had a pretty tough front nine, but that second nine he was ice cold. Shades of Lyds winning Olympic gold. Just showed no fear
I was listening to the Chipping Forecast podcast this morning, a short one straight after the Open was concluded. They are all big fans of Ryan Fox and they mentioned that a while back, they did a study on the speed of play to see what was a reasonable time to allow - they determined an average speed for each player on the European Tour (DP World Tour?) and Foxy was the fastest at 26 seconds. Andrew Cotter (commentator for his winning putt) was all ready to build up the moment as Foxy came to his final putt (they were frantically trying to work out if the final putt of a major had ever been a birdie to win the whole thing) and he said he had no time to say much as Foxy just walked up to the putt and stroked it in.
Earlier in his round on 9 or 11, he'd had a chip from off the green almost make the putting surface but then rolled back down to his feet. The comments guy was all "take a deep breath, compose yourself" as the ball trickled down the slope. Foxy just walked up to the ball with no delay and played the perfect chip.
