DEAR ITV COMMENTATORS

Get a tape of the '96 AB v Scotland tests (Bill McLaren, Laurie Mains and Muzza)

Or get a tape of one of the Andrew Cotter/Martin Bayfield games from RWC2015

Listen carefully 2-3 times.

Try to emulate.

@mariner4life

Find Marshall a bit of a curates egg. Some of his analysis is bloody insightful, other stuff is just waffle.

His saving grace is his enthusiasm and excitement for great play no matter where it comes from. Loved his "Go Mr Jet Shoes!" comments when Habana scored a stunning try against us a few years back

taniwharugby

@Victor-Meldrew Marshalls analysis outside of Comms is excellent, RS often talk to him on a Friday morning in super season...it is a shame he gets excitable and speaks without thinking in comms because he clearly knows his stuff

Except when he makes up new Laws or forgets existing ones. But yes, he can spot some pretty clever stuff that would go unnoticed to many.

Maybe him and Wilson should swap places in the Test match commentary team?

Wilson contributing more regularly.. Marshall on the sideline doing analysis during breaks in play

Sorry, you're suggesting a halfback would surrender the spotlight in favour of ... well, anybody really? You've met a halfback haven't you?

taniwharugby

@Crucial you highlighted the wrong part of that statement, because when you take it out of the context of my entire sentence...

it is a shame he gets excitable and speaks without thinking in comms because he clearly knows his stuff

again, when he speaks on the fly in comms is when he can get things wrong, he doesnt do that in his radio interviews.

jegga

“ why yes , I’d like to hear more of what a halfback thinks” said no one ever.

KiwiPie

Commentators disagreeing with a referee's decision to give a penalty having not listened to his explanation of the penalty which was for a completely different reason to the one the commentators are talking about.

Bones

While we're at it - whilst I'm pretty damn happy with the ITV coverage, having all the games (I'll ignore their incessant high tackle and England garbage) - it's a bit disappointing and I think they're missing a trick that there's no extended highlights show on pre-watershed. Big miss.

Not that you ever get a choice.

It's on at 7pm. After all the news broadcasts have finished.

Bones

@MiketheSnow really? on 1 or 4? I went hunting about 3-4 nights ago and didn't see anything until about 11pm or midnight.

I'm pretty damn happy with the ITV coverage,

It's OK when Miles Harrison is about 100km away from the microphone.

Coverage was better in 2015 IMHO. Perhaps it will improve past the pool stage.

Perhaps it's part of his career plan - become a rugby hack for a UK newspaper.

Jailbreak7

@Victor-Meldrew It's actually not OK when Miles Harrison is any where near a microphone.
He's a total plonker and a muppet who offers nothing except an extremwly irritating voice.
I'd be happier if they left the comms with ex-players.

Victor Meldrew

@Jailbreak7

Commentary hell would be Miles Harrison and Jonathan Davies. The Waldorf & Statler of TV Rugby but without the wit.

Davies sole contribution to technical analysis is to repeat the phrases "Space out wide!" and "You just can't do that!".

Jailbreak7

I remember the days when Harrison used to say stupid phrases i.e when a player made a great run on the way to the tryline "Oh and look (insert name of choice) is going......." They got rid of him on Sky didn't they.
