US Open Golf

mariner4life

I've read a few articles on the US open this weekend, and how ridiculously hard it is going to be. Tiger reckons Winged Foot is in the top 3 hardest courses in the World. By all accounts the rough is ridiculous, and everything is narrow.

I've just seen videos of the greens and they are fucked. Fast, slopped, all over the fucking shop. I've just watched one where the guy putted 20 foot one way past the hole, and it ended up as far the other side of the hole after it rolled back (having stopped).

I reckon i would battle to break 200. If you make par apparently you'll win.

Should be hilarious viewing

That play into tigers 3 wood and balanced play. Likely a 60/1 shot though.

Go Ryan Fox!!

JK

I think so too. Only once in the US Opens played at this venue has the winner been under par. Just look at how lush that rough is and it will stay lush too throughout the 4 days with no crowds to trample it.

Course looks amazing.

taniwharugby

@JK love to have a crack at a course like this!

I recall when I played in a big tournament at St Andrews in Hamilton, which isnt overly tight, but they had set it up narrow with long thick rough, slick greens, I had some big holes that day!

JK

Been an interesting watch so far with a couple of aces and now having a laugh at Phil hitting some classic big lefty fades!

JT leading at -5 with Patrick Reed -4 and Rory at-3 all in the club house

Ryan Fox all done at +4 and Danny started OK and back to even after 5 after dropping a shot on his first hole

JK

Danny ends even after a standard danny lee bogey birdie sorta day.

Mickelson +9 and at the ass end of the field

mariner4life

Haha kokrak is a funny name

taniwharugby
taniwharugby

Danny Lee T35th at +5 makes the cut, Reed leading at -4 only a few left on course

Fox misses the cut, T140th on +19

JK

Totally forgot about round 2 and only just seen the leaderboard and I think today's scoring is much more like what I expected round 1 to be.

That 85 of foxys looks like a disaster. 3 doubles on the front and another couple of the back. Looks like one of my cards

A few notable names scoring in the 80s today - Garcia and Speith both with 81s

taniwharugby

@JK Sung Kang highman with 86, 4 doubles for a 46 in the front 9!

JK

Gotta wonder what Danny got up to on the 18th today.....finished his round with a 9

Chris B.

@JK Looks like he was channeling me! 🙂

taniwharugby

And he has pulled out, pretty pathetic if only due to a sulk over those putts, rather than an injury

He's had sooo many withdraws though!

voodoo

Just 23 of 56 fairways hit by the bloke with a 6 shot lead, on this course, amazing!

JK

And Bryson wins the US open....the only player under par...

Second hatiest player on the tour. Glad there was no crowd for him.

That footage of Danny Lee though. That is some severe club abuse at the end.

taniwharugby

@Hooroo I havent followed alot about Bryson, but I see he cops alot of shit on social media, whats that all about?

I'm not too sure about the social media thing but when he went off at a reporter for showing his bad golf and focusing on him when raging and he said they shouldn't as it will affect his brand, he immediately went into the DH basket

dogmeat

@voodoo wrist seemed fine when he took out his anger on his bag

Dickwad

taniwharugby

@dogmeat that was probably how he injured his wrist...

@Hooroo alot of the social media stuff I have noticed is around his attitude that involves a temper?

Brooks Koepka is one I think is a bit of a dick.

MajorStokes

Watched the final round in its entirety. Was pretty boring once BDC got the the 3 shot lead, as then he just played "par golf", nothing exciting, all very boring.

I do like his methods though.

3 years later

1kiwi

Well BDC wins his second US Open and Rory once again finishes 2nd as he did a year ago.
Rory definitely had his chances but missed two putts inside his last three holes to finish a stroke back.

taniwharugby

@1kiwi yep, Rory will def be ruing this one, huge chance went begging.

Fox with a top 50 finish (T45) at +12, only 7 players finished under par.

this really is the big story. @Hooroo would have been in the majority with this attitude in 2020

Now look? BdC is arguably the most popular guy going around. His social media stuff is top quality. He's suddenly humble as fuck. Look how he interacts with fans? He's in the middle of the final round of a major. He's just dropped shots and slipped in to second. And he stops to shake hands with a disabled spectator, and sign his hat? Remarkable stuff.

And by christ doesn't golf need it, with the worlds best player being devoid of any personality at all.

And it's a problem for the PGA because he plays on the Liv tour

taniwharugby

@mariner4life couldn't agree more.

And the sad thing is, it will be painted as LIV v PGA, fluffybunnies, its fucking golf, I dont give a shit who pays the winnings, I just want to see the best when I watch it, not always with an '*' to many.

As for the #1 being devoid of personality, dude, he got arrested at an event recently, what more can you ask for* :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

*agree otherwise.

Massive choke by McIlroy. Unless he starts winning a few more majors, he'll be remembered as a nearly man.

barbarian

There's a touch of Greg Norman to McIlroy now, which makes him so much more compelling. Although unlike Shark he's already banked four majors so I'm not sure the 'nearly man' is quite right.

I'm no fan of LIV, I hate the schism and the silly money that's flying around. But that said, by god it's made the majors unmissable. The stakes just seem so much higher.

1kiwi

He's now withdrawn from the last remaining Signature Event on the PGA Tour this year.

Rory McIlroy announced on social media he will withdraw from the Travelers Championship.

The move comes on the heels of an excruciating runner-up finish at the U.S. Open, his 11th top-five in a major since he last won one (2014 PGA Championship).

"Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest l've had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer," McIlory wrote Monday on Instragram, adding his congratuations to winner Bryson DeChambeau. "... As I reflect on my week, l'll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day. But, as I always try to do, l'll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives. ... I'm going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. See you in Scotland."

MajorStokes

Good on him. The love for him over here is immense.

And made me feel better about the 106 I shot last week.

With 4 pars and a birdie.
