@Tim love that one early, but puts hands in ruck, gets the rewards...

Sometimes forget how good Mils was as a running fullback back in those days.

really? how do you forget this?

I just do (early on-set dementia?), maybe because I compare him with the gold standard Rangi (I'm not @Chris-B) Cullen, and remember him as the solid all round fullback he was more than the attacking dynamo.

Mils is our 2nd best FB is have seen. Great runner, really good at bringing his wingers in to the game. He's the man. One of my favourite ABs of the past 20 years (probably 2nd behind Kaino)

I'd probably go Cullen, Kipper, Mils of the ones I've seen.

Agree with you on Kaino for favourite AB of the last 20 years.

Kipper can't compete with Cullen in terms of sheer brilliance (despite being quite brilliant himself) or with Mils in terms of longevity

Yeah, and that's why he's second, and I don't generally have longevity as one of my key metrics when picking my favourite/best players.

18 year old Jonah. I was a big fan of Luke Erenavula as a kid.

Luke Erenavula

Such a differnet game back then. Would love to have the space in the calendar to play a Probables Possibles game in a regional stadium.

@mikedogz Cheers for posting that, I was at that game ... the girls we were with (from the local Catholic school) wouldn't shut up about how hot Marc Ellis was.

I hope you enjoyed a bit of second hand success on the back of it?

Watching these videos, rugby was at its absolute pinnacle in the late 90s

@taniwharugby Why are you @ing me when mostly discussing Manawatu players. 😉

But agreed - moe mai rai Jared and Norm.

@taniwharugby not too many people gas Christian Cullen on the outside..Joe Mafileo has story to tell his grandchildren, from what I have heard chatting to some individuals that played in that game..Cullen had not come across the very little known Mafileo, but having seen him run around in North Harbour club in the mid nineties..I knew he could shift..,Cullen in most cases would show the player the outside knowing he had the pace to rope him in..problem was Mafileo possessed stunning pace over the first 30 metres.

Which is why it's so annoying that for all but 2.5 years of the 90s we were fucking shit.

Any relation of the THP?

I watched that this morning.

Some hideous jerseys on display.

I love the way some of the tackle attempts were half hearted as players were in two minds whether to have a go or get steamrolled.

1996 AB series in SA on Sky now with Bill McLaren commentating

Pitch in shocking condition looks like they’ve been grazing sheep on it until just before kick off.

It’s actually the last game of the Tri Series with the 3 match test series to follow

Bovidae

Some of those SA provincial games on the 1992 tour would be good to see again.

Is the 1992 tour documentary that screened on TV and had the old timers (Bob Scott, Kevin Skinner etc) watching available on Youtube? IIRC it also had Herscel Gibbs who got to tour round with the ABs as he was a big schoolboy star at the time.

I remember the punch up in one of the provincial games, Ian Jones was showing his Northland mongrelness despite looking like a choirboy.

Bovidae

@Nepia I did find this.

Very bad picture

Sivivatu magic for Wesley. Their hooker has some wheels.

Bones

@Bovidae not too shabby by the 'rua tighthead chasing Sivi too!

taniwharugby

@Bovidae you able to post the teamsheets?

A fair few familiar faces (running/kicking style) in there

I haven't been able to find it. From the commentary, RBHS had Messam, Ripia and Aporo in their side, and Ruki Tipuna was the halfback and made the NZSS team. Sailosi Tagicakibau scored the first try for Wesley.

Wesley didn't have any NZSS reps in 2001. 🙄 Joe Schmidt, what were you thinking?

Rotorua did score plenty of points themselves, just not enough.

Wesley College: 53 (Sailosi Tagicakibau 2, Tekori Luteru 2, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Viliami Veikoso, Michael Spence, Stephen Donald tries; Donald: 5 con, 1 pen)
Rotorua Boys’ High School: 32 (Ruki Tipuna, Sam Cameron, Raureti Grace, Penalty Try; Tipuna: 3 con, 2 pen)

Bones

@junior is that Spence? Classic - I thought for his try he looked like the wiley-old 200+ club caps, typical openside.

mikedogz

I played with Spence when I was in my prime, Counties Under 13 open weight. He was man size and as hairy at 14/15. He would have been a second year 7th former there. He ended up playing a few seasons for Wairarapa Bush.

Bovidae

I watched "Blood, Sweat and Touring" on allblacks.com's YT channel last night. Fun times back in 1990 with local French refs. I hope they also release a good quality version of "The Good, the Bad, and the Rugby" as that is even better. A VHS transfer doesn't look good on a big screen.

There was a trailer earlier this month but nothing since then.
