Yup, definitely. Bracewell and Mitchell also kept us in it with the bat and made a game of it.

It was a weird match. Shouldn't mask issues with the side though. Beat thing is we are playing some young lads. There are still a lot of lads in the side who started together in NZ U19 sides from between 2008 and 2011. Good to get some new faces in there

Prior to Duffy's triple wicket over, they were 120/0 needing 53 from 42 and Santner (our best bowler to that point) had just bowled his last over. There really should have been no way back.

You can thank me. I stopped watching when SL had just brought up the 100 opening partnership. I did not expect to hear this morning that NZ had won.

A real game of 4 quarters with Black Caps winning quarters 2 and 4.

Incredible that Sri Lanka weren't able to go on with it after being in such a dominant position after 3 quarters.

Foulkes looks like he could be a handy death bowling option.

Yep Foulkes specialisies in bowling at the death.He has come over to Brisbane for the last 2 years and played in the 20/20 Club Competition bowling at the death he has gone pretty well.
Normally the Australian players are playing in part of that comp.

Need to pick Max Chu as keeper instead of Hay. He has been doing superbly in Plunket Shield this summer and got 82 in the Super Smash on Friday. Has another game this arvo.

@four-more-years Hasn't Hay been a consistently good performer at domestic level and is excellent with the gloves? Hay deserves a decent chance first.

I agree, but so has Chu. Should've given one of them the ODIs and the other the T20s. It will be an interesting battle to see which one succeeds Blundell for the test job.

Yeah 100% Hay is a better WK and has been good with the bat he made 49 in the last ODI in Sri Lanka.
Hay is a better WK than Blundell he was very tidy last night behind the stumps 3 catches including a 30 metre run to grab one of them.

I am surprised that Chu hasn't been given an opportunity.

And given that Stead is on yet another "holiday" there should be a separate coach for the T20I team at least.

In all seriousness does it matter THAT much in 20/20 ? Astle and Ryder batted middle order in test cricket and opened in shorter forms. Surely it’s not that much of a stretch for a capable batsman.

Carbon copy of the other game so far, Sr Lanka will get 100 odd without loss and then collapse. Easy.

Does Jacob’s open?

He hasn't at provincial level. Was used as a finisher by Canterbury. Partly why he is so 'unknown '. Get very few opportunities down the order in t20.

He did open in the Brisbane club t20 comp, though. which has basically got him an ipl contract.

He also opened for Auckland youth teams (i19s etc) in the national 50 over tournaments, IIRC.

Thing is, he can hit it so fucking far, that using him when there are 5 men on the ropes is quite a good use of resources. He clears them more than most. As long as you have a good top 3 made from other players, usually you do, it is the easier and most popular batting positions in T20 cricket. NZ just suffering a temporary deficit in those positions due to freelancing taking out about 5 options.

Yeah. If ihere and now mattered. Then , with this group available , Mitchell would be the obvious choice to open.

A Mitchell opening, Jacobs at 5 would probably be the better bang for your 'build depth' buck, assuming truckloads of openers will become available next time T20WC rolls around anyway.

It's the perfect method to protect old players positions in the team. Get in blackcaps squad, don't play, but also can't play for your province, so no pressure goes on your place.

It stopped Matt Henry replacing Southee when he surpassed him about 5 or more years ago, but it took Boult's retirement to actually finally get in the team.

Colour me 0% surprised to hear that commentators observed the current blackcaps coaching / warm-ups to be lackadaisical.
