I actually remember going to that game as a kid, on the day that Adams and Lara put on a clinic. Those were tough times to support the Black Caps haha.

I was there too with mates on the bank drinking beer bought by a mate who had borrowed his Dads tie to go to the liquor store to get them ( we were all 17/18, magic memories ), I vividly remember Curtly Ambrose walking past the bank to massive cheers while his team was batting ( to be fair with their effort he had a lot of time to have fun with the crowd )
Keith Arthurton was a cool dude to watch bat as well, had all the swagger of Lara but obviously no where near the consistent talent.

Losing Paddles was massive but inevitable and that was also the period where Crowes knee started playing up. Cairns being out of the side as much as in due to injury didn't help either. I recall Dion Nash being injured a lot too which was a bugger as Doull, Cairns, Nash was a very good trio if they could all get on the field at the same time. The problem was they didn't do it too often which meant gutsy triers like Shayne O'Connor, Robert Kennedy, Murphy Sua etc played instead and no disrespect to guys who were a million times better at Cricket than I ever was but they weren't up to standard.

It's not really, we've fielded far far worse.
Going through them I'd say Young was a pretty good opener especially by that eras standards. Jones was genuinely one of the best we've ever had. Rutherford was a better player than his record would suggest. Fleming another with class and longevity. Parore was a fine keeper and class batsman ( not that his record shows it too much ) Doull one of our better seamers and Morrison a gutsy trier who was probably past it by this stage.
None of them make my all time BC 1st XI but Jones, Fleming and Doull are contenders for my 2nd XI.
Unfortunately Lara did his thing, Adams was in a big purple patch, others chipped in and the guy I'd consider THE most underrated pace bowler of all time absolutely destroyed us.
Yes, some of them ended up having ok careers, but at the time of that test, it wasnt up to much.
It was about the same standard as our sides of the late 2000s early 2010s.

A lot of guys retired from the 80s era, Crowe was shot on the injury front, and the next generation weren't quite ready at the time, so we had a lot of stop gap players.

Fantastic bowler in his day, had a few injuries though.
Jamieson's numbers in all of the shorter forms don't make for great reading, I am not sure he's that well suited to it. His FC and test record are out of this world though. We just don't play enough tests for him to be a specialist test bowler, but I am also not convinced he should be in the T20 team. He probably doesn't make the side if all our bowlers are fit though.
That was definitely out, it changed trajectory slightly after it hit his hand. It is a bullshit way to get out though.
Chasing a modest total of 165, none of our batters are finding any timing and making hard work of it.

I’ve liked the look of Robinson in his short time in the team. Seems to have the power of Finn Allen, but plays more genuine cricket strokes with less risk, rather than being an out and out hell for leather hitter.
Conway looks to be really out of form. Playing and missing or finding the edge a lot, hitting to the fielders when he does get one.
Conway misses one too many, stumps knocked over.
Probably best for the team, coz there’s been way to many dot balls with him there.
