Yep. I did see some typically low quality analysis in the Herald briefly try to sheet the result home to SA having a T20 Franchise League and us not. But as a one-off game, T20 is rarely that deep.
Otherwise there'd just about be an inquest at Australia losing to Zimbabwe 
The SA20 series is a plus for us. Few Black Caps also playing in the series. Not sure if the are included in your team.

Yep, Super Smash is discounted. It's the theory that we should have a Franchise based T20 comp, rather than one based on the existing domestic teams.
Allegedly part of the NZC CEO's departure before Christmas. Given his preference for team(s) in the Big Bash.
Theory is more money and more marquee players. How we're getting around the scheduling clashes with SA and the BBL in the summer holiday window will be interesting.
But key people are seeing big $$$ signs, so it seems we'll get our sugar rush.
After last night we probably have to change the Big Bash model now as well...

We must be the last major cricket nation without its own 'proper' T20 franchise comp
needs to happen, attract overseas players and maybe find a way to tie it in with the Big Bash (winner of each comp plays each other etc)

Of the best bats in the BBL which basically finished the day before they flew out, only Mitch Marsh played (and oh look he got runs). Finn Allen is obviously not a kiwi. Warner retired. For some dumb fucking reason they aren't playing Steve Smith. Sam Harper isn't there.
Cam Green is a complete myth. Tim David barely played. Inglis kicked his heels carrying drinks for the test team. Maxwell couldn't buy a run this summer. Stoinis did okay, especially given where they batted him, Connolly has failed at every single opportunity.
I am more surprised at their attack TBH, Ellis is a wizard, Zampa is usually very reliable. Bartlett is a proven performer in this format. Just a horrible tournament and perhaps a symptom that the Aussies don't care.
I think they care. Some of them though as you say aren't in great form and having Green and David at 3 and 4 seems crazy when you have Steve Smith available. Sri Lankan conditions probably don't suit either of those guys. The game I watched where they lost to Zimbabwe it looked as though they hadn't adapted to the slower wicket. Renshaw looked ok in that game but they didn't play him against Sri Lanka.

they were on top this game as well, 97 runs after 8 overs no wickets down
only to blow it and lose all 10 at 7 runs an over
easily left another 3-40 runs
they picked Smith as the replacement for the injured Hazelwood but didnt pick him..
comes across as pure arrogance, they seemed to believe they could cruise through the pool games with who they have and save Smith for the bigger games

The financial backing bit is the interesting one to me. Unless they can get some serious money out of TV rights (and to do that, how much of it becomes developing NZ talent v another leg in the global IPL), I'm not sure that there's huge dollars left to extract from the NZ market.
That said, and back to topic, the game somehow is sustaining very regular T20 World Cups, so somehow it all must be paying for itself...
