AFL 2026

barbarian

That time again! All 18 fanbases are optimistic so it must be time for the actual footy to begin.

Here is my assessment of the teams this year.

Genuine Premiership contenders: Brisbane, Geelong, Gold Coast
There or thereabouts: Adelaide, Sydney, Hawthorn, Fremantle, Bulldogs
Could sneak into the eight: Collingwood, St Kilda, GWS, Carlton
Good on their day: Essendon, Port Adelaide, Melbourne
Still in the cellar: North, West Coast, Richmond

I'm more optimistic on the Blues as I think Curnow was a dressing room cancer and they look better without him.

There's so much talent in the two Queensland teams that it's hard not to see them in the top four. Might be a few early bumps as there was last season but they will both come good over time.

I think the storyline of the year may well be the continued failure of North and West Coast. Without any green shoots there will be some very angry fans and a few coaches and admins polishing up their resumes.

Kiwiwomble

Its the bloods year....get obliterated in a final....followed by a rubbish year, we didnt even make the finals last year so a flag, Coleman and Brownlow on the way

  • trying blind optimism for a change
barbarian

It's not far-fetched. The talent is there if you can stay fit.

Kiwiwomble

@barbarian dont you dare try and jinx us, you right them off right now or else!

barbarian

Oh yeah they are cooked. Especially since Carlton have their draft pick. Dean Cox already on the hot seat, I reckon he'll be gone by round six. Who will they put in his place? You'd have to think an experienced coach who is ready to win now, one who has succeeded on the biggest stage. Surely you can't go past John Longmire.

I'll believe it when I see it. Straight sets exit wasn't great.

Only one game in the heartland!

NRL goes to Vegas.
AFL goes to NSW and Qld.

That comp is intense!

Yeah I think there'd be a case for the first category in they fired a shot in the finals. But hard to see the minor premiers dropping completely from contention.

I think a 3rd-7th place finish looms. Too much talent on the list and guys like Thilthorpe, Rankine, Rachele etc will only improve.

mariner4life

finally! we're back, and it's wall to wall footy here in the Sunburned country from thursday to sunday every single weekend until October. New competition format too with a "wildcard" round to let 9th and 10th play finals. booooo
AFL kicks off with "Opening Round" that was originally set up to take advantage of the NRL world looking at Vegas. Now it's a week later, coinciding with the rest of the NRL kicking off, it makes less sense. Also there is a game in Melbourne because the Victorians did what they always do when something happens in footy that doesn't revolve around them, packed the shits and stamped their feet until Collingwood got their way. Flogs.

Anyway, this is how the Lions supporters are entering the season:

when you go back-to-back there isn't much to worry about. As long as Carlton or Nick Daicos don't win, i don't give a shit.

That said, we are overwhelming favourites for the three-peat. Our list profile is ridiculously young for the success we have had. We have lost clutch finals player Cal Ah-Chee, ruck warrior Big-O and annoyingly a really good defender in Brandon Starcevich. But, being good means you get good free agents, picking up a good forward in Oscar Allen, and a good ruck in Sam Draper. We also have an elite back line all coming back from injury. It looks for all money like run off half back will be the key metric this year, and we have like 12 elite guys at that. If Lachie Neale can focus his anger at getting busted rooting his missus's mate in to footy, and the rest of our elite midfield continue their progression then just maybe you will hear the mighty roar again in September.

Geelong lost the GF, badly. That usually means you fall to about 10th. But this is Geelong, like the Melbourne Storm they never die. For once they didn't just get handed a big inter-state free agent. Scott is an elite coach, they are, as usual, a solid bet for top 4.
Collingwood have all sorts of advantages. Nick Daicos is annoyingly good, if overrated by the Vic-centric punditry. The knock on them last year was their age profile, and they definitely ran out of puff at the end of the year. A couple of stalwarts like Mihocek are gone, the hit the draft, and will try to re-tool. Too many melbourne games means the probably still play finals..
Hawthorn flew home last year before being overwhelmed in the prelim. Mitchell looks like a gun coach. They have abundant young talent, but already injury concerns. No huge list moves, so if their last couple of months was sustainable, should push on.
The Sunnies played finals last year, and won one in an absolute belter. Hardwick added steel to their obvious talent. They picked up Christian Pretracca who is still really fucking good, and Ugle-Hagan who has obvious talent if they can keep his head right. Their midfield is ridiculously good. Should make the 8 again. All Qld GF would have Melbourne in flames.
GWS keep making finals but lost their most important member to Tassie (their social media guy was elite). You know what, they've been up for years and keep finding new and interesting ways to crach out, and i am picking them to be a play-in team at best.
Freo lost a heartbreaker of a final and Nat Fyfe last year. Don't worry Dockers fans, they picked up Mason Cox as a replacement. With West Coast essentially a WAFL team, they are the Wests only hope. But Freo never win, so don't back them in.
Adelaide made big strides last year as they were expected to do. They eventually got Ah Chee but he's hurt his knee. No big list moves so improvement has to be internal. Showed a bit last year but how long can Tex keep kicking goals?

Ah the Dogs. Constantly get their list talked up so the pundits can take shots at Bevo. Bont is still the best player in the game IMO, they do have talent, the play in was made for them. Can they push on this year? who knows, but probably not because Bevo can't seem to get them to win close games.
The Swannies had the traditional "pumped in the GF fall down the ladder" year but they got smoked by injuries. They desperately need goals from somewhere other then their midfield so Curnow is great for them (fitness pending). Serong isn't a bad pick up either. Too much talent at the coal face to not get back to finals, could come top 4.
My favourite quote of the year so far is "there is no drug quite like a Carlton preseason". As usual, for some reason, expectations are high at the Blues. Unbeaten preseason, got rid of the locker room cancer Curnow (ignore he was one of the games best players a year ago), Vossy, against all odds, has learned to coach. Baggers are Flaggers! Curnow and De Konig are actually big outs, Silvagni as well. Spoon.
St Kilda have spent coin on the list this offseason, bringing in established first graders to help a talented but young list. Ross the Boss will have some of the funniest press conferences this year as always. Haven't won a flag on colour TV, won't change this year, play in.
Port Adelaide? who cares. Fired Ken who kept getting them to finals. Won't progress.
Melbourne? Who knows. Stephen May had to retire because he is not right in the head. Clayton Oliver wasn't right in the head (but differenty) and is now at GWS. Petracca wanted out and got it. That's a lot of premiership experience gone (though only May really played last year). Probably not good enough to contend even for the play-in, but i really don't know.
Essendon! The play in was designed to try and get Essendon to break their finals win duck that is now stretched out to about 50 years. Sadly i think the other Scott is a shit coach, there isn't much to rave about on their list. That drought is going to stretch
Richmond have young talent and will develop, but still bottom 4.
North are North, things don't seem to be improving, the game may have moved on from Clarko.
West Coast will get the spoon

mariner4life

You've put a bit of mayo on there. I don't think expectations are high at all. Even the most optimistic fans are tipping a 6th-7th place finish.

I actually think the Curnow trade will be good for both sides. Swans get something they've been missing since Buddy in his prime (7-8 years ago), and the Blues get to retool smaller, faster and younger without a complete rebuild.

De Koenig will be missed. Silvagni too but he barely played the last three years.

My tip is 11th-13th but all fans want is a few green shoots, a full season of Jagga Smith then pick up Cody Walker and build to the future.

mariner4life

message boards and SEN callers beg to differ. It's on Barb, start booking yourself a hotel for the last weekend of September.

barbarian

You live in Queensland, what SEN callers are you hearing?

mariner4life

all of them because AFL nuffies are my favourite entertainment

Kiwiwomble

i do love with AFL....fucking anything can happen.....and so the wild speculation always has a small chance of coming true

mariner4life

also, it's a semi-satirical post on a sports forum, for a sport that like 5 us even passingly care about, so perhaps just take it a little lighter.

barbarian

Yes hard to convey tone, I wasn't being serious. My tickets aren't booked for September but my Jagga Smith Brownlow Medalist 2026 tattoo has certainly drawn a few interesting comments.

mariner4life

now i have seen the bet is Walsh Brownlow Smith rising star double apparently. Get on!

barbarian

Add Harry McKay to win the Coleman and I'm suddenly back in the Sydney property market!

mariner4life

flood of Blue money will keep the price down.

mariner4life

Sad news in the AFL world with the passing of the great Dennis Cometti. Dearly missed in the box, one of the best commentators in any sport i have heard.

Kiwiwomble

get.....fuckin....in!

that curnow bloke is pretty good, would hate to be the team that let him go whoever they are 😉

mariner4life

ok i have had my fix of watching Carlton suffer their ritual first round heartbreaking loss, can we fire them from prime time for the rest of the season?

what's that? no? they will play on Thursday or Friday night 6 more times before round 12?? Fuck me dead.

mariner4life

at half time i thought i was pretty right about Carlton but had wildly over-estimated Sydney. Then that third quarter happened and Sydney look top 4 and Vossy became roaring favourite for first coach sacked (if he wasn't already).

Sydney won't have it that easy often this year, and relying on Amartey up front is not going to get you far. But a 10 goal win when you only kick two in the first half is a pretty good start to the season.

mariner4life

Also, and it's my own fault for watching on Ch7, but by christ the commentary sucked. During the 2nd half bloodbath it was all about what Carlton can do to come back next week instead of excitement of the home team flogging fuck through them.

Then in the post match in an effort ot create a sweet narrative, they had the audacity to compary Curnow's debut to Buddy Fucking Franklin. Get the fuck out of here

Kiwiwomble

i think the reality check...the moment i knew this wouldnt be the norm...that it said more about the blues than us....was when grundy kicks a goal from the forward pocket.....i assume he was trying to sub off and the ball landing in his lap

mariner4life

So the Suns are going to be a problem

mariner4life

Geelong flogged. Suns really good, Petracca looks happy and lethal. Still get to ad Matt Rowell to that midfield. Oof

Lions lose R1 in a cracking game, Bulldogs win a close one against a good side. unheard of. Lions also lose 3 to suspension which doesn't make for a fun trip to Sydney.

Collingwood beat St Kilda in a scrappy one in front of a huge Sunday night crowd.

mariner4life

my sadness at Carlton getting a win is tempered by the fact that it was Tom lynch that cost the Tigers the victory.

Apparently a million dollar player. Can't fucking kick straight.

mariner4life

they can't still be paying him that surely?

barbarian

They aren't really paying anyone else, bar Taranto. But yeah was pretty ridiculous.

Carlton veer violently from playing decent footy (1st half) to some of the worst you've ever seen. Vossy's half time talks must really be something.

mariner4life

i reckon the only difference was Carlton jumped Richmond at the start because they at least had a game under their belts

barbarian

They jumped Sydney as well last week, though. And they were a good first half team last year.

Kiwiwomble

and the Bloods keep marching on !

comprehensively beating the reigning champs....although...another game where we effectively had one outstanding quarter and then coasted

think it was 2024 where we did the same, made the final on the back of one outstanding quarter a game...and then got embarrassed

mariner4life

Sydney and the Bulldogs are very good. Gold Coast too, who basically took the 2nd half off yesterday against a reserve grade side.
As for the rest? Hawthorn bounced back, but GWS regressed. Geelong got a win after trailing at home for ages. Collingwood lost this week. Could be pretty even through the middle of the comp this year.

Essendon still suck. Carlton still suck. North got a big win. St Kilda have spent all teh money to start even worse than usual.

Tough start for the Lions. Get the two early season form teams, and get a bunch of guys suspended. Not too fussed really, very early days.

barbarian

Yeah that's it, so early on. Ultimately, though, we know what the comp is.

Good teams: Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Geelong
Decent teams: Bulldogs, Freo, Adelaide, Hawthorn
OK teams: Collingwood, GWS
Bad teams: Melbourne, St Kilda, Carlton, Richmond, North, Port
Really bad teams: Essendon
West Coast: West Coast

mariner4life

flicked between both codes last night, should have stuck with the AFL. Quality game, teh running and pressure were elite for round 3 (2). The first quarter was ridiculous, but even at the death Hawthorn just never let any Sydney player have any time to generate a decent forward 50 entry.

Curnow had opportunities but he's just not good enough to be the man.

Good win for Hawthorn, both teams will go deep in to September.
