An ANZAC Bledisloe?

[mod edit - split from another thread]

chat seems to be getting more confident on this side of the ditch that there will be an ANZAC Bledisloe next year.

Get fucked.

@mariner4life I don't like it either. Right, smack in the middle of Super Rugby, which would be paused for the week. They're talking about Supposedly, Dave Rennie supports it.

@mariner4life i dont mind as long as its not an extra one, if they move the third one to ANZAC day then it could be a real event, even a midweek game, its a vibe in the the office when people have their gear becaiuse theyre going to an AFL game on thursday after work or chatting about state of origin

A wildly successful Super Round on ANZAC weekend and then they go ahead and change it the next year

Playing the other side.
Although I also thought one of the best weekends Super Rugby put together, however Im guessing viewership and attendance numbers still not what they're expecting. Curiously I dont know numbers, but did viewership greatly exceed previous weeks?
If you have to break the comp to fit this in, then to me it says the comp needs fixing though as this feels like the last resort.
Lastly from audience perspective why rugby in this part of the world has missed this bus historically (whether super, or country) is still beyond me however its happened and perhaps what they tried this year didn't move the needle enough to get viewers to focus on this code.

good point althought i didn't think it NEEDED to be on ANZAC day to be successful, if NZR is determined for the AB's to be the main show...then giving them a big event might be a good idea

More concerning to me is the suggestion in 2028 they will play an ANZAC Test in the USA. What's the point in playing on the other side of the world on ANZAC Day... surely that defeats the main purpose - eyes on the game?

Fuck there are some dumb fluffybunnies who run the game.

yeah...that i have a problem with, its going to be an ANZAC test then they need to have been doing things like dawn service and community stuff that day...not trying to explain what the hell it is to americans

@mariner4life Mentioned in the Post this morning that is what NZR plan to do with the reciprocal fixture. Everything is a cash grab - they will kill the golden goose.

should be a cash grab, other codes already making a lot in this space and rugby missing out. Reciprocal makes sense. USA makes no sense

Kiwiwomble

@bayimports other codes walk the line of making something specially AND a cash grab...they make it a huge deal FOR people ANZAC day means something too, Ive met a few old mates form my rugby club where ANZAC day is one of the few days they get out of the house, do the full day, dawn servcie, breafast at the club, down the PUB to see which of their old mates are still around and then down to whichever stadium is hosting an ANZAC game (AFL, NFL etc) they prefer....having to explain what ANAZC means people undermines it

Stuff/Sydney Morning Herald:

"The commercial deal between RA and NZ Rugby hasn’t yet been agreed but is likely the game will mostly, if not always, be staged in Australia as one of its home Bledisloe Tests.

The massive windfall made by hosting the match in Australia will be equally split.

NZ Rugby now also have the ability to take some All Blacks tests offshore but given the special nature of the Anzac Day test, it is not likely this one would be played the US, Asia or Europe."

mariner4life

So we take one game from the 2nd half of the year and add it to the first half of the year?

My personal opinion is this is just crass commercialisation and I'm disappointed NZR have agreed to this suggestion pushed by RA.

In fact if you're going to do this for cash, why not take it offshore for the most coin you can get?

It's driven by the Aussies.
Australian state governments will pay for the game.
Meaning that the game will probably always be in Aus.
The clincher seems to have been that the revenue will probably be a 50/50 split.
Some of that Aus state govt money going to NZR, tick that.
NZR has always been keen on getting more OS cash for OS games (looking at England there).

The AFL and NRL are already into Anzac Day bigtime.
Hitching their commercial interests to a solemn national event.
Makes my skin crawl a bit.

Especially the NRL!
When WW1 started, Aus rugby union closed down all its competitions, and all the senior players enrolled in the forces.
Rugby league didn't do that, and played on.
By the end of the war, rugby union was essentially non-existent in Australia.
Nice job by rugby league.
And that's why league is the dominant rugby code in Aus.

At least an Aus v NZ rugby game will also be a national occasion, unlike an AFL/NRL "club" game.
