I’ve been saying this for years.
I find penalty shoot outs tedious.

It just creates villains when some poor soul misses and then always gets remembered as the guy who missed. He might have been man of the match up to that point, scored or saved goals during the game, but will only get remembered for one thing.

Imagine how much better extra time would be if one team needed to score, no sitting back, they have to go for it.
Also, the team with the advantage, do they sit back or do they also try to score?

What about a touch style drop off? Play 5 or 10 minutes then drop a player until someone scores

2nd half of Netherlands v Japan this morning was brilliant.

i love random stats, the only time NZ have scored first in this tournament previously was same minute of the game we played against Italy in SA. In that we ended up having a draw, in saying that we all know we didn't lose a game that tournament

awful defending there, reasonably good build up turns into NZ thinking they have more time than reality and botch their attack dreadfully allowing a counter attack that almost saw an equalizer. Mr Left Post with the save

A couple of other good chances too. A very open game at times.

back to even, 1-1 Iran capitalize

at very least we've been very competitive and have done well getting the guys up front in attacking position

Not a fan of Wood taking the free kicks. Very open game surprisingly, Joe Bell has a massive job in the 2nd half cutting out Iran's counters.

Quality goal

Have to continue to snipe through the middle and use Wood to hold up the ball in the box. Our crosses lack quality

We’re going for subs, it’s hot and we don’t look like we’re used to it. If game stays open we’re a chance but I think they are better executing on a counter than we are, so need to be clinical with chances or put it out

Need to get Wood involved. We don't seem able to get into the opposition red zone right now

He's the focus and everyone else has to run off him

Abjectly....great result

in the moment...we had as many chances to win as they did

that's a wonderful performance against a way way higher ranked side. we didn't stick behind it and try to hit on the break, we took them on, and can be a slight disappointed with a draw in a cracking game.

NZ deserved a point. If only some of those crosses had more quality. Surman immense.

Brilliant performance all things considered

Yeah fun watch looked like we were up for the fight. Will take the point but being in front twice has to be tough on the team been so close to first ever win. Hope it gives them more confidence

Great game with both teams contributing a lot to the game. The high cross game wasn't very effective IMHO, we looked better when our nippy midfielders drove into the top of the goal box and got it into Wood. That's the way forward

looks like we just dumped Iran down 3 spots in their ranking.

What was the Egypt Belgium game like? Nice to see us play positive football anyway. I assume those two are the top ranked teams in the group
