Lima Sopoaga raving about Fletcher Cooper on Sky Sport right now. Talent beyond his years that's for sure.
If the Canes offered Billy Proctor a five year contract, surely they'll be doing the same with this kid.
That second half stretch from minute 46 to minute 56 was pretty spectacular: try, conversion, drop goal, grubber kick line break assist, try, side line conversion. 17 unanswered points scored by himself to bring his team from 10 points down to 7 points up.
I don’t really like hype trains so I’ll bracket this by saying there are still some areas of improvement, I think: his right-to-left pass can still be a bit clunky and his speed of execution at the line needs to quicken. That’s not a whole lot, though, and you have to wonder how much development he would get by playing another year at St. Pats Silverstream.
I was impressed when I saw him play at the Global Youth Sevens last year. It might not be a bad idea to get him into the NZ 7s and turn him into the best possible athlete he could be. If there are further gains to his development, I reckon they might be there.
Nice summary and you're right, that 10 mins was pretty crazy. As Lima mentioned he's already doing things that take many professional players years to learn, so he's definitely well ahead of the game ability wise. Obviously, no way near the finished product yet so it will be interesting to see how he kicks on over the next five years.
I think getting him involved in those professional environments at such a young age would have also sped up his maturity but as you suggest, getting him into the sevens where he can express himself more might be the better way to go when he becomes available at the end of next year. It's crazy to think he's still only year 12 and has one year left in college rugby.
I wouldn't be surprised if Wellington and Canes signed him to a long-term contract as every franchise will be after signature when the time comes.
