So the West Indies get up over the English at the Rose Bowl. First test match post-Covid, no crowds, but a cracking game.

Cool game. I left the Windies at effectively 4 down for 30 something, with some admiration that they'd pushed the poms valiantly. The new dukes was going all over and the poms were bowling disciplined.

A fine win for the caribbeans. That Blackwood 95 must have been class on a 5th day wicket with uneven bounce.

Crazy toss decision by Stokes in that weather. Anderson bowling like he's 10 years younger. Poms still picking journeymen batters who average under 40 in 1st class, and come to test cricket with glaring technical flaws - play 10 games, get a ton and only ever get mentioned with the suffix " oh yeah, I think I remember him" Vince, Malan, Stoneham, Keaton someone, Carbery, etc. Now add Denly and soon crawley.
Not that I can offer better but they're taking our "chuck em in and see" approach to batsmen selections to new heights.

Jason Holder is a marvel.
Please let there be a turning wicket so we can see big Rahkeem in action. He's got bigger

Root obviously got one 9 months ago, so he's back for the next one at old Trafford on Thursday.

Oh, and if there's one professional sport where the players are used to no crowds, it's red ball cricket!

There's another virus at play affecting test cricket at the moment. It's symptoms present as administrators with their head up their own arse.

Like the other virus, this one is another reminder that we put too much faith, give too much credit, to those that govern the things we hold dear.

The Poms and Pakis keep going off for bad light.

No rain, just overcast skies and an astonishing unwillingness to use the lights - even though the players want them.

About the only genuine sporting contest in the world right now, potential worldwide audience and the telecast keeps being interrupted for bad light.
Million dollar light towers watch on in silence.

All the stringent covid preparations and effort in putting international cricket on in this way, in probably the only country able, and the ICC can't pass an extraordinary permission for lights to be used in August 2020?

Meanwhile the cricket is fucken grouse! Pakis are trying hard to be patient in typical English conditions. They've got the world's longest tail but an exciting bowling line up. Pakistan 223 for 9 after winning the toss, end of day 2, 2nd test.

The last day's play of the 1st test was classic test cricket. Poms needed 277 with all wickets in hand. The day just see-sawed and just when it looked gleefully like the Pakis would win, Woakes and Butler put on 139 at nearly run a ball, so the baddies won a thriller.

But I digress, fucken bad light in a lockdown pandemic, jesus !

Beefy is an absolute legend. Will always be one of my all time favourite players. Guys like him and his mate Viv Richards would absolutely dominate even more in today’s era.

Bloody nice fella too, I met him when he was on a speaking tour in the Middle East when my family lived there in 1990. A few years later my old man spotted him at a restaurant in Welly and got him to sign a napkin for me, he was a bit pissed but still remembered Dad from that tour he did.

Ya gotta feel sorry for Flintoff and Stokes having to try and live up to what he did....

Mate is in Barbados on holiday (apparently a 'safe' destination according to the UK) and at a bar gets talking to Greg Armstrong (ex player/rebel manager) who is big friends with Sir Gary.
After expressing how much of a legend he thinks Sobers is, Armstrong takes him to Gary's house for a drink and a chat. Out of the blue the signed bat arrives at the hotel the next morning.

I would say he's a jammy bastard but tbh this kind of thing isn't unusual for him. He is just a really likeable bloke that has a knack for making connections.
As an example, I was walking to a meeting with him in Belgravia one day and this car slows down and Paul Weller calls out hello. Turns out my mate used to live near Weller and his missus would babysit the kids sometimes.

It's a tough one. Kallis was up there with Tendulkar, Lara, Dravid, Ponting, Hayden........plus had the added bonus of being about as good as Chris Martin as a bowler ( never a world beater but pretty damn decent ).

He's the only "batting" All Rounder that deserves a mention. The majority of the rest are "bowling" all rounders. Closest of the modern era would be Stokes if he continues improving like he is I guess.

100%, all I'm saying is Kallis deserves a mention for his extraordinary achievements too. Both of them are world beaters based on their batting alone, they'd be hall of famers whether they turned the arm over or not.

In terms of aura Sobers has it all over Kallis which is perhaps a tad unfair. As you say their stats are pretty similar overall.

Sir Gary would also open the bowling as a seamer and then come back as a spinner - and could bowl left arm orthodox and Chinaman (or Chinamen?) - basically left arm legspin.

Kane's Sunrises vs Kohli and Hesson's Bangalore. Elimination final so red hot occasion. Bangalore made 137 odd and Sunrisers 2 for 50 odd when Kane came in at 4.

He simply won the Elimination final for his team.
50 not out and a partnership with Holder that got them through.

Just Classic Kane. Just as a lull was developing he clinically smashes danger spinners over midwicket fence the nudges a 4 then creams cover drives. A bloody pleasure to watch.

Earlier Boultys Mumbai gets 200 batting first against Delhi. Delhi bat and after 1.4 overs are 3 wickets for zero runs! Boulty with two jaffers. Mumbai straight into the final.
Two Tauranga lads instrumental in earning their teams big pay days.

I noticed that Sky had an promo for the upcoming Australia-India series at HT in the rugby broadcast. That seems more interesting than subscribing to Spark to watch NZ vs WI.
