Heh Heh! England caught the whoopsies!
a cracker of a game in SA. Ngidi the hero, and we're not the only ones struggling at the back end of T20!
with seven balls to go, England needed seven to win with Morgan having hammered 14 runs from the previous three balls and still on strike. But holing out that ball, it gave South Africa the glimmer of hope they required with Ngidi on the tools and he did not disappoint.
also wanted to note the Aussie Women beat the Indians int he final last night NZT. Was a good game - India absolutely choked it at the end, threw away wickets and imploded.
They needed 41 off 35 with 7 wickets in hand, and were all out losing 7 for 30 or so. Epic choke.
I like cricket, and quite happy to watch women's cricket. As more sides build quality, it also means twice as much cricket to watch!
Auckland v Otago in the final of the Ford Trophy on now.
Looks like two OTago batsmen have retired with concussion and been replaced. Otago 114/2 after 18.4 overs, on skyp sport 2
Munro scores a century off 58 or so balls; match winning innings. Auckland need 140 off 30; should be a walk from here. Well played lad
Otago have kept it interesting by picking up a few wickets but Munro has destroyed run rate pressure so otago will need to bowl them out to win.
Very nice innings from Chapman to see them home. Good to see some form from him, hopefully a bit more batting depth.
Really unfortunate for Otago that two batsmen had to retire hurt. First Rutherford after being sconed, and he was going great guns too, then Foxcroft who was also going along nicely but got absolutely nailed in a classic SBW shoulder charge. The latter returned but the two retirements hurt Otago, cost them runs and possibly the game.
This incident also begs the question of whether your 12th man should be able to contribute with both bat and ball, or possibly should they simply be a batsman given you're most likely to lose a batter. Of course, the injured batsman may actually be a bowler, hence perhaps having an AR as 12th man. Then if you lose two permanently (extremely rare, yes, but almost happened today) should there actually be two players available to step in?

Presumably to the concussion laws, rather than to injury?
Some interesting comments in here, including:
Another well-regarded Australian sports psych is Graham Winter, who played for South Australia, has worked with the Australian test team and three Australian Olympic teams and written books on the mental stresses in cricket.
He notes an oddity in the way cricketers prepare that leaves them vulnerable to creeping mental demons. "There are not many sports where there is such a difference between the practice environment and the competitive environment," he said. "I don't believe coaches come to grips with that very well."
In the nets, bowlers bowled as many balls as they can, and batsmen faced as many as possible. In a match, there were pauses between every delivery, and cricketers needed to know how to manage them.
When he runs sessions, he allows for these. Sometimes other coaches complain to him that batsmen need to feel bat on ball. "You also need time to practise how you own your space and how you hold your shape," said Winter. "[You need] to practise how to play cricket, not just how to bowl or hit a cricket ball."

It is an absolute fluffybunny of a game
hell yeah.
Social media really doesn't help people's mental health. Chatting to someone whose mate was literally suicidal, but you'd never know it from their social media feed.
The Fern is the extent of my social media. You'll never see a more wretched hive of scum and villany, but it works for me
@Stockcar86 509/4 - Is this a record total for Premier Grade One Day Cricket in NZ?
If it is not then the second wicket partnership of 408 in 41 overs is still mightily impressive.

I see a certain person on that scorecard has just been caught D.I.C

@Higgins 500 is an insane 50 over score - congrats, and in the clubs centenary too!

South Africa are the Jinx of Cricket finals!
I see their women lost the semi against Ozzie in a rain hampered D/L affected match
England didn't even get to play India.
I was hoping both SFs would be rained off so Aussie missed out on the final too.
Aus were very lucky and so am I as I've got a couple of big punts that rely on them to win this.
This probably counts as other cricket.
Henry Cooper scored another Plunkett Shield tonne today, the selectors must be taking notice.
Speaking of the Plunket Shield, some history was made in the previous round. It was the first time ever that a player from each team made a century in both innings. The players were Joe Carter (ND) and Mark Chapman (Auckland).

"In the first 25 matches of his test career, from his debut in March 2008 to the middle of the tour of England in May 2013, Southee took 81 wickets at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 64.
"In the next 25, from the final match of that 2013 tour to the end of the tour of Zimbabwe in August 2016, he took 91 wickets at an average of 31 and a strike rate of 63.
"Then in his last 23 matches, from the tour of South Africa in August 2016 to the end of India's visit in March, he has taken 112 wickets at an average of 24 and a strike rate of 49."
Okay the next person who tries claiming that Southee is past it or a journeyman at Test level is wearing my walking stick - the metal cored one
@SynicBast I'll give you a really good example of how stats can be misleading.
In the Perth and Melbourne tests last year Southee was statistically our seond best bowler with the quality figures of 12 wickets at 25.75. However, he's an opening bowler. A strike weapon. In the first innings in Perth his first wicket was Matthew Wade. They had 225 on the board. His next wicket was at 325. Hardly the stuff of a genuine strike bowler (ie one who can help his team in all conditions). In the second innings he got David Warner with 44 on the board which was helpful but then next struck at 148. He very nearly claimed a ten-for in this match, FFS! But we were never in it, basically batted out of it in the first innings.
In Melbourne, he got three first innings wickets. Normally that's probably quite a useful return. Except the three were batting heavyweights Starc, Cummins and Lyon and his first was at 435. Nothing in the relatively brief second innings of this match although Wagner got three and even Mitchell Santner burgled a wicket.
I'd say that's more of an issue that Southee isn't an opening bowler, but he might be good for mopping up the tail.

You're not suggesting he could be selected on that basis?

Someone's got to clean them up, otherwise that's how you get McGrath making a test 50 against us.
Southee hasn't played every test - what are the equivalent figures like for Boult and any other opening bowlers we've tried?
@shark those are outstanding numbers over a 12 year period. What the fuck does the guy have to do to get some much deserved recognition for what he’s achieved?
You could pick any bowler that has ever played a test and lay claims to why they’re shit and why their stats don’t tell the whole picture.
Jog on pal.
