@rapido Wimbledon played in the first eight seasons of EPL with a best finish of 6th

Of my generation. I can think of a few 1980s First Division teams from that decade that haven't played Premier League yet; Oxford, Luton, Wimbledon, Millwall, Swindon.

Ipswich Town also comes to mind

Bovidae

@canefan I wondered about them too, but Ipswich was in the Premiership as recently as 2000 before being relegated again.

KiwiPie

The first EPL season (92-93) has QPR, Sheffield Wednesday, Wimbledon, Coventry, Ipswich and Oldham who all seem a long way from it these days. And Blackburn who were soon to win it. Barnsley and Bradford had top flight spells in those first few years and Coventry weren't relegated until 2001 having been in the top division for over 30 years.

There aren't many teams left in the Championship who haven't been in the EPL. Luton, Bristol City, Preston and Peterborough from next season I reckon now that Blackpool are back in.

And they a had a great start to the season, may have been leading (or maybe second to runaway Man Utd) pre-xmas. George Burley manager. Came about top 4 I would guess, at time I don't think all top 4 qualified for champions league.

All from memory. First year living in London, remember that season quite well. Can't remember a single Ipswich player though ....

Edit. Looked it up. Was 2000/2001. They came 5th. Wiki tells me "pipped by Liverpool on the last day of the season for a place in the Champions League."

Getting my 99/00 and 00/01 seasons a little blurred.

Both had a similar them of a promoted club going great guns before fading.

Sunderland in 99/00
Ipswich in 00/01

Ispwich relegated the year after.

Ah. I get them and Millwall mixed up in my head sometimes.

If this is your work, did you not have enough time to go back to Season 1? Meaning of course 1888-89!

KiwiPie

Notts County were relegated the season before EPL started so we are not one of the 50 - but we are in the National League playoffs (just 3 teams to beat to gain promotion) at the start of our long journey back to the summit.

dogmeat

@kiwipie It is my work but I decided to limit it to meaningful seasons a.k.a since Fulham first put in an appearance

canefan

Have Nottingham Forest been in? They were big back in the days of the Cloughs

I was going to mention this but didn't want to bring up bad memories. 🙂

On a similar tangent, which club has been in the EPL and now fallen the farthest?

canefan

Amazing that Luton have never been in. They were prominent for a few years back in my childhood

Bovidae

@dogmeat I don't know the answer myself but Bolton were in League 2 this season.

dogmeat

@bovidae Swindon were relegated to L2 last month. This will be their 4th stint at that level since the glory days of 93-94

KiwiPie

I'm not sure if any EPL teams have fallen out of the league - Notts the closest to doing it. Technically Wimbledon became MK Dons and so didn't fall out of the league.

I reckon these clubs have reached League 2 after being in the EPL

Blackpool
Bolton
Bradford
Coventry
Oldham
Portsmouth
Swindon
Wimbledon (via MK Dons)

Kiwiwomble

@kiwipie that does get interesting, the legal entity become MK dons but the majority of the fan base moved to AFCW and reformed in the combined counties so well out of the league

dogmeat

As a complete digression my 7th Form took over a school assembly and among dishing out awards, ransoming a teacher and other things we sang the Womble song. I was wearing my mothers bridal gown.

Too much Python I reckon

Right as you were...

dogmeat

@kiwipie Honourable mention to Blackburn - EPL Champs to mid L1 and Forest Champions of Europe to twice spending time in the 3rd tier

Some quizzing for you on the EPL since it started.

  1. Which team has the longest consecutive run of top 6 finishes?

  2. 20 teams have had a top 6 finish in the EPL. Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle, Leeds, Aston Villa, Blackburn, West Ham, Ipswich, Leicester are 14 of them. Name the other 6 without looking it up.

  3. If the top 6 each season were given the points 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 for positions 1-6, list the top 10 clubs in order. (The top club has 218 points and the 10th has 20 points)

  2. Fulham? Bolton? Wigan? Portsmouth?
KiwiPie

Not Chelsea for most consecutive top 6.

  1. Bolton (6th in 2004/05)
  2. Wimbledon (6th in 1993/94)

Assuming the consecutive streak isn't current, Arsenal under Wenger had a long run in the top 4/6.

Oh yeah, I forgot about them 😅

Rapido

I'd already said one page back that Ipswich came 5th. Proof you fluffybunnies don't read my posts.

Ipswich is listed as one of the 14 teams by @KiwiPie.

KiwiPie

@kiwipie said in EPL 2020/2021:

Southampton is one, the others aren't. Southampton were 6th in 2015/16.

Answer to Number 1 is Arsenal. 24 seasons from 1995/96, consecutive top 4 for 20 of those seasons. United got to 21 seasons from the first until Moyes. Chelsea's best is 19 until Mourinho Mark 2. Best current streak is City at 12, the last 11 all top 4. Spurs were at 11 until this season.

Bovidae

Wolves are one of the top 6 teams.

Edit: They finished 7th so not them.

Kiwiwomble

@kiwipie QPR?

edit:i gave up and looked it up :man_shrugging_light_skin_tone:

KiwiPie

Not Wolves but yes QPR were 5th in the inaugural EPL season.

  1. Bolton (6th in 2004/05)
  2. Wimbledon (6th in 1993/94)
  3. Southampton (6th in 2015/16)
  4. QPR (5th in 1992/93)
Higgins

Burnley went extra good about five years back where they finished about 5th 6th or 7th so they might be one of them.
