Hovland and Aberg just won 9&7. Biggest win ever in the Ryder Cup. Won 9 of 11 holes and halved 2. Against Scheffler & Koepka. Ridiculous

sparky

Great morning for Team Europe so far but what is wrong with the Yanks?

Dodge

What an incredible turn around in 2 years. Scheffler looked broken after that this morning. Then Cantlay basically fell apart on 16 and 17 greens to hand the match to Rahm and Hatton.

Ryder Cup day 2, and the US are getting totally pumped. I don't know what's going on, but it might be over today

And how much sleep are we losing? 😀

canefan

US mounting a comeback in the afternoon matches. Comfortably up in two matches, down 1 in each of the other two with plenty of holes to play. If they want to give themselves any chance of getting close enough to compete tomorrow I think they have to win all 4 matches. Spieth has been ice cold in all his matches so far, and he's continued to be a burden to Thomas. If they had an alternative option I think the US should have played them

sparky

Great comeback by Team USA this afternoon, although Team Europe still well ahead and only need 4 out of a possible 12 points tomorrow to retake the Ryder Cup.

But the momentum is with the Yanks and all to play for heading into what has been yet again a wonderful spectacle.

@taniwharugby

Every now and then, one of the Seppos comes out with the “we should be paid” thing. Two issues here; firstly you don’t HAVE to play, just decline. Secondly, just how much fucking money do you want?

You know what, just fuck off.

I notice some of the US players are not wearing caps on the final day. Is this some form of protest, or do they just enjoy playing with the sun in their eyes?

On the subject of pay to play, I guess the counter argument for not getting paid, would be that they should get paid to compete in a very lucrative TV event, the same way as football players or tennis players get paid to play in the WC or Davis Cup (assuming they get paid)

canefan

The US made it interesting on singles day. But in the end they gave up far too much ground on the opening day, most of the team played poorly. Interestingly, one of the commentators said many of the Americans had not played competitively in four weeks or more, and questioned how seriously they were taking the Ryder Cup

sparky

Europe win. Absolute scenes. Clearly it’s an emotional moment for this guy.

Catogrande

@canefan

Re the paying thing, I can understand it to an extent but then you need to factor in where all that TV cash goes. After that there is still the fact that it is an invitational event to play in a team environment in what is an individual sport. You can say “no thanks”. Interestingly thee is a pay to play thing for the Presidents Cup, but who cares about that?

Having said all that and taking into account the LIV issue and his that has shaken up the status quo, I’d say it’s only a matter of time before they’re paid. My guess is that as and when that happens, general interest in the Ryder Cup will wane.

Let’s us also remember that none of these guys are worrying about paying their mortgage at the end of the month.

JK

Awesome few days of golf. The atmosphere is just something else!

Dodge

@Catogrande I don’t know, I didn’t know they weren’t paid to play until this year, and as somewhat uncomfortable as millionaires not being paid might sound, I think he’s right. Lots of people make a killing from this event, why should the players do it for free?

I agree. I don't think the fact they earn big money should be a way to justify not paying them, at least to cover costs. Unless the RC is the only invitational team event where individual pros pay for nix. A quick google search suggests Davis Cup players get paid, although at a much lower rate than the players could earn from other sources

taniwharugby

@canefan I assume it was originally an amateur competition, that has evolved into picking the best available (although Dechamblowhard would dispute this) which is all pro players.

I couldnt care less if they are paid or not, but I expect given the profile and coverage, someone is making some good coin out of this, so no reason why the players shouldnt get their piece of gold.

KiwiPie

Google tells me each US player gets assigned $200K, 100K of which goes to a charity of their choice and the other 100K goes towards PGA nominated charities.

Rory is pissed about a lot of things. Getting played by Monahan and not getting that Saudi money. Not a big fan of his whining and virtue signaling but that caddie should not have been anywhere near his line. A nine iron to the shins might have helped him realize his position.

Hooroo

I like Rory less and less as time goes on. He’s a shit spokesman for the PGA. Just comes across as a fucking whiney prick.

No. Within the actual squad. But both those guys should have been there if the US were serious about winning

I don’t necessarily think that the players should do it for free, but at present it is the purest contest in top level golf and players doing it for the team ethic is, I feel, a significant part of that. Moreover, most players are very happy to play for free and in fact seem to enjoy the completely different environment this brings. If that changes and the RC no longer draws the top players, or ceases to be a competitive event, or even that payment becomes an issue for the majority, then maybe changes would need to be made.

Right now it is just the odd person with a gripe about not being paid for something that he can easily just decline.

I agree that any pay should be token, as opposed to representing a financial incentive to qualify for

In a way that’s the position now, the players and their entourages get well looked after and they’re given money to donate to charities. Someone mentioned a figure of £200k?

Patrick Reed, not so much.

Maybe so. But if you add Dechambeau, Reed, DJ and anyone else from LIV I've forgotten in there, I think the US could have won. Johnson had his captain's picks and could have used them. He picked Spieth, Thomas, Burns, and Fowler along with Koepka and Morikawa. 4 of those guys did fuck all IIRC

WTF do they do to their sportspeople? I've never met a whiney Irishman in person, but BOD, Sexton, McIlroy all come across as whingers.

Really? The US team room already had enough issues without adding two cancerous personalities in there (and DJ). Not to mention Reed and DJ have been playing just as poorly as the players you mentioned.

If anyone should feel hard done by it's Keegan Bradley.

And ultimately the captain's picks sucked, but so did everyone on that team (Homa aside). None of those picks featured in the 9&7 loss...

barbarian

I like Rory. Has the stones to put himself out there, and has been hung out to dry by Jay Monahan and the PGA tour brass.

I'll take the ups and downs of Rory ahead of the bland nothingness brought by Cantlay, Schauffele and Scheffler any day of the week.

1 month later

MajorStokes

Rory's just been handed 15mm from the PGA for generating interest.

Yes, all of the above is correct.

I have to say I actually find professional golf quite sickening now. The levels of money are absolutely fucking stupid. Rory's just been handed more money than 99.999% of the worlds population will earn in their entire lifetime as some sort of a bonus for being on twitter.

My last sporting fan goal in life (US Masters) has pretty much so evaporated since LIV. Shit like this, doesn't help.

but but but moi traditions! way to make the ultimate sacrifice there Rory.

The only golfer i have any time for is that guy from Full Swing who doesn't give a shit.

@mariner4life oh for the days when Tiger was nailing it (on, and off the course...)

WTAF, a prize for not playing golf FFS...more so when PGA used him as thier mouthpeice in the battle v LIV, made him unlikeable to many (I love watching him hit a golf ball though)

LIV & PGA need to pull thier heads out thier arses and let them all play fucking golf.
