The failure of Seifert and Allen is concerning, but that's quality from Phillips and Ravindra

Not really. That's the ebbs and flows of Cricket. They have both scored big in the tournament so far.

Minnows well and truly put to the Sword.

Super 8 spot officially locked in.

Fair to say NZ are a much better batting team than bowling team in this form of the game. Definitely could be cause for concern later on.

Cyclops

Why do cricket tournaments always have the worst possible structures? Was trying to figure out what the loss to South Africa means for our path through super 8s and the answer is nothing. No difference whatsoever. The ICC in their eternal wisdom have preseeded the super 8s, so now that we're through we'll face England, Pakistan* and Sri Lanka. If we'd beaten south Africa and topped our group we'd have had the same super 8 path regardless.

Assuming Pakistan qualify. If they somehow contrive to lose to Namibia then the USA* will take their place.

Unless the India also lose to the Netherlands, by a stonking great margin, in which case the can leapfrog both a defeated Pakistan and the USA.

Cyclops

To be fair, the preseeding means we dodge India, South Africa and the West Indies (and Australia if they make it).

We should make the semis. We need wins over two of England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to have a decent chance. SL will be tough but England and Pakistan have struggled for form so it's as good as we could have hoped for really.

BCs have a match against Canada coming up tonight.

Potential banana skin game ( as any 20/20 can be ) although I'm sure the SA result was a wake up call.

Canada ranked 19th, apparently played their first ever international match in 1844 ?!?!?

Players with surnames like Singh, Sharma and Dhaliwal indicate that maybe there isn't a hell of a a lot of homegrown talent.

Win and a spot in the Super 8 is guaranteed. Carn Caps !

I have no problem with the Indian diaspora contributing heavily to the new national team.

It's the new Tana Umaga game... ask anyone from the UK to name a Samoan who shouldn't be ok playing for the ABs. (A game suggested by someone on the Fern.)

I tried it. Bingo! "Tana Umaga". Born in Lower Hutt.

These guys are Canadian enough to be qualified.

Chris B.

@Cyclops I reckon the Aussies are cooked.

Even if Ireland tip over Zimbabwe - I reckon the Lankans are " professional" enough to recognize it's in their interests to get rid of the Aussies while they can.

Godder

I assume the super 8 etc is to maximise playoffs = TV rights.

Good to see diversity in team sports - that's one way to help sports grow in new countries, having migrant communities who start clubs etc. in sports they like.

Bovidae

I couldn't watch but I see that NZ is still struggling to take wickets in the power play, and in general.

Gunner

Good knocks by Phillips and Ravindra, for different reasons.

Phillips, his classy innovative, destructive self with the left handed 6 for good measure.

Thanks Canada for getting Ravindra into some sort of form. This is weird to say about a guy with a strike rate over 150, but he kinda struggled for a lot of that innings but seemed to start middling a few the longer he batted.

bayimports

@Gunner agree its the type of tournament you need confidence in depth

Look at us versus SA and Aus versus Sri Lanka, both good starts, but then couldn't maintain the momentum to be competitive on these pitches

Gunner

Also, why are we playing journeyman McConchie, the back ups, back up?

Why isn’t Sodhi playing, is he injured too?

African Monkey

I must say, it is nice to see Zimbabwe doing well again after the tough years they've had.

Must feel like 1999 all over again for them.

sparky

And Australia are knocked out of the tournament.

bayimports

So NZ v Pak first game of S8 in Colombo? Looks like we have to navigate Sri Lankan pitches for the whole of next round

MN5

I'm confused ( not for a first time )

NZ can afford to drop a game and still make the semis is that correct ?

Batting order is full of power and deep, no issues there, it's all the pies from the bowling that are of concern.

@Gunner said in T20 World Cup:

I'm guessing they saw his batting and fielding as a closer replacement for Santner and maybe see his bowling as lower risk (although that didn't really work out). The pitches in Sri Lanka might suit Sodhi so it would have been good to play him even if he might have gone for a few on that road.

....not to mention there would have been feelings that "it's only Canada" so there's room for rest/rotation ( which for a period looked like it might bite them during that opening partnership )

Gosh I hope Santners guts are feeling better.

Yes. The Super 8 is two pools of 4. You then play the other teams in your pool. Whoever finishes top 2 of their respective pools makes the semis.

bayimports

Zimbos loose important wicket but still need 10 runs from 7 balls to beat Lanka.

bayimports

1 runs from 4 balls lol they could top that group

bayimports

Winner winner chicken dinner

African Monkey

Soooo are Zimbabwe a dark horse?

bayimports

Or Sri Lanka ensuring even no outside mathematical chance of Australia coming back

T20 clearly more chance at upsets in every game though

Cyclops

I wonder when the Aussies last had to play a dead rubber where they hadn't qualified the next stage.

No Quarter

All of our Super 8 games are at 2:30am which is pretty stink

Had a quick look, one instance looked to be the ODI WC in 1992
They missed out on getting out of the group stage even before playing their last game against the Windies

I was at Lancaster Park watching NZ lose to Pakistan in our last pool game. We had to win for Australia to still have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the play-offs, so once it became obvious we were going to lose, the crowd started chanting "Goodbye to Aussie", eventually followed by "Aussies are w__kers" as our creativity shone through...

I don't remember us losing to Pakistan in the pool. I can't forget us losing to them in the SF πŸ˜”

Looking forward to game later, lucky that this week I’m in the right Timezone for it. Tariq will be an interesting proposition for us since we haven’t faced this mutant yet

We lost to them two games in a row!

I remember there being discussion that we should throw the pool game against Pakistan to knock out the Aussies, pretty sure we didn't throw that pool game though.

I remember thinking we could win the SF until Martin Crowe went down, and Inzamam Ul Haq took the game away from us

@canefan

Still not over that. Tears on the terraces.
Lord’s 2019 did not help.
Avoiding all future WC semis/finals. Unless selected to play 🀞🏽

Mike Hesson coached Pakistan … surely the fall guy if NZ get up . Getting close to kick off not sure if we get Ferguson back yet

Just reading square under cover although not much rain about hopefully no delays
