are you okay mate?

Yeah, I guess. I mean come on Mum, Kyle Mills? Really?

beggars cannot be choosers. The record of NZ ODI bowlers is appalling. I am not sure mentioning our 2nd all time wicket taker, who has one of the better averages for players who have taken 100 wickets is quite the outrage you seem to think it is. Especially when you factor in his peak world ranking.
Would i put him in? No, the top tier is pretty easy to select. But as a guy to talk about on, you know, a sports discussion forum, it's not that egregious.

For a Nation with our World Cup record, it is astounding how average our All Time XI is.

Oh agree we're largely shit. But he's totally a longevity pick. Chatfield is ahead of him on that list, and Danny Morrison not far behind, neither of whom would get a mention. Pringle, Allott, Henry all quite a bit better in my opinion. You'd also need to take into account that Mills was easily at his most effective opening the bowling - there's no way he can do that ahead of any of our good quicks.
He did a great job for us, and I probably shouldn't be so disrespectful, but in my defence I have long term scarring from our 120kph bowlers.

mariner4life

Allott is in that long line of guys who came in, looked shit hot, got hurt, and faded away. We have had a few "what if" players.

mariner4life

Our XI best players probably make the test and ODI side if we are realistic. What would be a more entertaining side to pick would be the "cult hero" XI.

Dudes like Roger Twose.

Carl Bulfin and Heath Davis are a shoe in to open the bowling.

You need a keeper, Tony Blain bleached his hair. He'll do.

Some fine and extremely worthy selections from the 92 era in there though.

Shane Bond was far too world class for a team like this, he's no chance.

mariner4life

John Wright is too well respected.

Godder

Greatbatch wasn't a bad keeper., just use him.

Rod for Wright is very good
Taking our Twose for Blain though?
I thought about it but couldnt bring myself to include him but in reality the most likely keeper we've had with his own following is the inventor of Bazball himself.

Baz far too close to an automatic spot in the "good" team so I wouldn't pick him.

I'd go Bryan Young as a keeper/batsman ( before reinventing himself as a test opener ) I remember him and his mo and some gutsy lower order knocks.

What did Twose do to warrant a mention here ?

I remember thinking it was pretty quirky a pom played for the Black Caps ( or Young Guns as they were then ) but he wasn't that memorable was he ? ( genuine question, in terms of cult qualities ) he had a very good record too.

All the others you mention are extremely memorable.

Harris and Elliot are tailor made for teams like this.

Virgil

Swap out McCullum for Ian Smith?

Another option for the middle order could be Craig McMillian

mariner4life

Roger Twose? The guy who averaged 80 at the World Cup and was our best bat in the Champions Trophy in 200, the only time i ever saw NZ cricket actually win something until that Test Championship. That Roger Twose?

mariner4life

To add to cult status. Was fat, and a pom

Jeepers, Beefy Botham, Gatting, Taylor, Big Merv and Boonie must be clinically obese then !

Trust an all time NZ CRICKET team to have two fucken All Blacks in there. We're a nation obsessed !

Good team though, definitely capable of sneaking a very odd win here and there.

McKechnie earned cult status both for the ABs and NZ Cricket as well.

Bovidae

Shane Thomson. He could start his spell bowling fast medium and be used in the middle overs bowling off-breaks. A better ODI record with bat and ball than R Latham. And the headband.

mariner4life

Shane Thompson was definitely one of the first names in my mind too.

Saw the comments re Thomson while typing this out
id be more interested in fitting him into the above test XI than ODI
he did steer us to a famous test win while chasing a large 4th innings target.

urgh the memory of Park Cricket Colin opening the bowling....

I can only assume you mean Dayle, Sir RJ is the first name down in the other team, he can't be in both !!!!

No Richard, i mean you look back to the game in the 80's
Especially in OZ, Bay 13 at the MCG
Hadlee is a piston wristed gibbon etc

Hadlee was our greatest player AND a character......but I struggle with him being in a "gutsy trier" type team.

Speaking of Oz I saw this recently, so, SO good.

Virgil

i thought it was Cult XI as in cult players...

OK, I took it as a team for guys who were characters but maybe not really top class. Gutsy triers.....basically the whole 1992 WC squad excluding Crowe.

Michael Rae deserves a mention for reviving the Chris Martin look and for the fact that you can pretty much guarantee he'll never play again despite going pretty well.

oh and thanks @Duluth for splitting this.

it was @mariner4life. fault

Allot was very good, shame he only played 31 games
Stats are top notch, 52 wickets @ 23.21 and SR @ 29.38

interesting fun fact, only 2 Black Caps have a Strike Rate under 25 (at least 20 wickets)
One is currently in the side with 35 wickets

the other took 60 wickets

any guess who they are without cheating?
the 2nd one is a bit surprising, not a front line bowler.

Jamieson and de Grandhomme?

No both wrong sorry…

Cyclops

Is this tests or ODIs? Duffy might be the 35 wickets.

60 wickets for someone who isn't a front line bowler is an interesting amount, especially since they came fast - about 250 overs.

Jesse Ryder and Corey Anderson spring to mind as guys who had a bit of a golden arm. I suspect Anderson took more wickets and Ryder much less.

That’s a bingo
Yup Duffey is the one with 35 wickets and it Corey Anderson who has 60
The only bowlers with a strike rate under 25
I suspect it will eventually be only Anderson though
Pretty amazing stat
