With home internationals coming back to Sky, Sumo has just delivered a possible valedictory speech to Mark Richardson.

What ?????

No Quarter

Mature innings from both Conway and Latham to get us into a dominant position on what could have been a tricky run chase. Good to see us bounce back after the T20 final and initial big loss in this series. We still do have a lot of depth (well compared to the bad old days).

Donsteppa

I'll miss the free to air coverage for what it's done for growing the community game. Sumo's cricket commentary can ideally stay with TVNZ though...

What ?????

Thanked him for all his (20+ years) work in cricket commentary, hoped we'd see him comentating again somewhere, etc, etc - went on for five minutes. MR's last commentary stint in this series - and since cricket is going back to Sky, Richardson probably isn't going with it.

He isn't everyone's cup of tea but I really like Rigor.

Easy to forget he was one of our best openers ever too which always lends weight to his views.

Chris B.

@MN5 I didn't mind him either. He didn't take it too seriously - was usually quite entertaining.

I'd imagine he'd be able to do some radio commentary if he wants.

We'll presumably see Ian Smith back on the telly. Not sure who else Sky will resurrect. They had a really good commentary team before effing Spark stuck their oar in. Scott Styris seemed to just disappear. Doull went to India.

Cyclops

I hope they get some new faces in. I like Wags and Katey Martin of the spark/tvnz crew. Rigor could be good, but had a tendency to play into his grumpy codgy role a bit too much. Shane Bond did a little bit and was fantastic when he did.

Don't really miss any of the old sky crew. Doull and Smithy the only ones I really remember and they were fine. They briefly had Mike Hesson (I think it was just a guest stint in a single series shortly after he stepped down as black caps coach) who was fantastic.

If he hasn't burned any bridges I suppose we might see Scotty back on the rugby in future....

He was actually very good. Probably not much of a chance coming back. But would also like to hear more from him.

I liked Rigor, could be quite amusing in his dry sort of way.

At least not while Mike is coaching Pakistan

Bovidae

Richardson seemed to want to be a wannabe Boycott (note the hat), and that isn't a compliment.

Each to their own, I quite enjoyed his GOM persona and he took the ribbing from fellow commentators very well.

Hats are very sensible in the harsh kiwi Summer Sun.

As for Boycott well he was up himself, grumpy and ( probably unintentionally ) fun too, and his articles after England got hidings in the recent Ashes series were outstanding.

Chris B.

@Cyclops I really like Styris. I think he was just genuinely grumpy.

I'm pretty sure Rigor was part of the Sky team, along with Smithy, Doull, Styris, Cumming, sometimes Craig McMillan - and a few others like Hesson. They usually had good overseas guests especially from Sky UK - and maybe Debbie Hockley?

Jimmy Neesham will captain the Black Caps this evening as Tom Latham has been ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a thumb injury and Mitch Santner is being rested. Tom Blundell will join the squad as cover.

It really does feel like a farewell series for oldies.

Hopefully some of the new players picked for game 4 and 5 get a go

Donsteppa

88/4 just after drinks, not looking like we'll have the batting depth tonight unless the next two bring it most of the way home.

Wonder if that's a captaincy and maybe a farewell for the Neesh. Tonked with the ball, 6 off 8 with the bat.

Chris

Neesham time to go Son you are a spent force and now you are a. liabilty with ball and bat.

Donsteppa

Poor batting performance tonight. A slight worry that none of the newbies have looked like taking their chances, but early days. Combined with the Neesh playing the opposite of a Captains knock.

Bovidae

Making him captain was the worst option as he was guaranteed to bowl four overs. Four too many.

Chris

Some dumb batting going on here
Kelly you fell straight in yo the trap you didn’t need to play that shot,
Foulkes dumb shot also you just had 7 of 2
Neesham fuck 3 leg side pickup shots when the bowlers is bowling it wide to set you up as well.

@canefan it's the type of catch that 99.9% of players won't attempt because if you fuck it up, you're probably taking the ball to your face and people instinctively know that.

Definitely brave. I remember watching a replay of the Snedden catch. It was more regulation than that one, but his diving follow through made it more dramatic than it actually was. But it was a quality catch back then. That wasn't given....

Reminds me of Martin Snedden catching Greg Chappell that wasn't given by the Aussie umpires in that infamous game in 1981

I remember watching that as a kid.

Also cant forget this classic from Skippy, not running in to catch but still an amazing effort on the boundary and in front of the local's

I turned off halfway through our innings. Needing 74 off 10 with 7 wickets in hand was a cakewalk ... or so I thought. How you lose by 19 runs I have no idea

KiwiPie

Melie Kerr with a casual

6442444

to reach her 100 in only 52 balls.

Plus the statistical nicety of overs 17, 18, 19 going for 17, 18, 19 runs.

Kerr out for 105 in the final over and NZ post 194-6

Cyclops

Melie Kerr is obsecenly good at cricket.

Added 2/6 off 3 overs bowling just for fun, as we win by nearly 100.

Chris B.

Shit - that's a good catch by Kelly! I though Clarke's was bloody good in the last match - this one might be better!

Donsteppa

McConchie is cannon fodder tonight.

Chris B.

@Donsteppa Is Satnav not available for this decider?

Chris B.

Jacobs drops a relative sitter.

Chris B.

Clarke drops a somewhat harder one that should have been taken.

1kiwi

Another poor fielding effort tonight from the Black Caps.

Would surely have to be injured with the state of this lineup.

Crowd catches look more likely than Jacobs and Clarke so far...

Aren’t most of our good players over readying themselves for the IPL or PSL?

1kiwi

Santner is being rested. Was planned prior to the start of this series.
