Great game with both teams contributing a lot to the game. The high cross game wasn't very effective IMHO, we looked better when our nippy midfielders drove into the top of the goal box and got it into Wood. That's the way forward
doesn't really get any easier does it? tough group.
looks like we just dumped Iran down 3 spots in their ranking.
What was the Egypt Belgium game like? Nice to see us play positive football anyway. I assume those two are the top ranked teams in the group

cagey. Egypt were niggly, diving in to challenges, giving lip, lots of energy. Belgium looked like a team of better but old players. KdB probably should have scored twice, they looked way better when they brought Lukaku on as a real target up front. On another day Belgium win by 2.
Interesting, Iran has a world ranking of 20, and Egypt 29. We should feel quietly confident of our chances
Best game I've watched so far and I've seen quite a few - genuinely end to end and both teams knowing a win would almost guarantee qualification. Nice to see NZ go out there to play although we did get caught out a fair few times. Plus both goals were really nicely worked.

probably wont underestimate us now though, thought Egypt would have been above them myself, but i dont follow int rankings too closely

Me too. I thought Iran gave us too much time for the first goal, then again with the second
@Kiwiwomble said in FIFA World Cup:
@canefan give the boys a little credit, i think they fought for the tiny bit of space and time they had, coming through looking for second balls with intent
Oh yeah of course. I thought we played great. Look at the first goal, Wood's touch was amazing, Singh made a run that made the defence hesitate and allowed Wood to set up as target man in the box. The run from Just was perfect as was the finish
ive been out of the loop, was Just heralded?
felt like
- theyre going to come after wood, do use your size, hold your ground and hold the ball up
- singh, come through hot with intent you'll be the second target so make them think its you
- Just....thats where you come in

Apparently had a very good season on the wing for Motherwell

Did we even score a goal in our last WC? I remember all those draws.
If memory serves, we only scored 2 goals at Espana 82. Steve Summer scored one, was Steve Woodin the other scorer?
Edit Google confirms this. We scored against Scotland and were bagelled against Brazil and the USSR

He looks sharp. If they can try to establish Wood in the box again vs Egypt, Singh and Just will have chances. Maybe even Cacace. We need a ref who is not sympathetic to Egyptian simulation. Today's ref was good in that regard. Didn't bite, and they gave up trying for the most part

And the rankings outside the top 7 or 8 are really much of a muchness. Iran had a good record coming in the WC and only lost to a very good Qatar side. They have players in the UAE league which has improved out of sight given the money being splashed.
In the first half I thought we created a lot of chances and we’re just a tad slow to react to the space created or a retreating defence.
Overall though it was great seeing us play with confidence and a fairly attacking style.

Not to mention the Tunisian coach getting the sack

lol Tunisia have sacked their coach after they got pumped. He's only been in charge for 5 games after they sacked the last bloke. Sick team name though "The Eagles of Carthage".
They have a history of sacking
Well played

Is there no VAR at WC26?
I saw Egypt's goal vs Belgium, it was very well taken. We will have to be better defensively than against Iran

Yep
But there's already been controversy

NZ deserved a point. If only some of those crosses had more quality. Surman immense.
Yeah - thought Surman was our best player, though I imagine Just was our MotM.

The games I’ve watched the reviews have been pretty good. The best being the overturning of dodgy on field YCs when would be injured players were not even hit.
But as Mike said, there has been controversy (which is to be expected).
The games I have watched the refs have erred on the side of play-on as opposed to blowing up every contact for a foul.
Has contributed to entertaining games.

Yes, I was pleased that our ref didn't fall for early Iranian attempts to simulate fouls. Once they knew they weren't going to get calls they got on with it
@canefan said in FIFA World Cup:
Looks onside to me
Was just going to post that
NZ player kicks the ball towards goal first, then the Iranian.
When the Iranian kicks it I believe the goalscorer was in front of the last NZ defender
Feet and arms

Not a great angle. I thought the guy in the middle put the goalscorer onside. Need a slide rule shot to see.
The second goal was more disappointing. No one came out to challenge the Iranian winger, and we had two or three defenders in the box who failed to pick up the goal scorer

See my edit above re-the second goal. The vision is much more basic than EPL style VAR. Which I think is overdone. It was close enough that I don't think we should feel ripped off
