Spains ball retention is outrageous.

It has looked easy/boring for decades because they have a production line of players of incredible technical ability.
All of whom can receive and turn and scan in heavy traffic.

Put Haaland or Kane up front for them and they would be the best team of all time.

One goal conceded in 8 games too.

It's Floyd Mayweather esque. Hit and dont get hit.

Spain showing you can win tournament football without having a world class striker.

Pau Cubarsi playing centre back aged 19.

He racked up better stats than Cannavaro and Mattias Sammer who both went on to win the Balon Dor.

Dosn't get talked about enough this guy. We're watching a generational centre half without people even realising it.

The thing that I love about how Spain play is how their keeper plays off his line to take away long balls over the top and enable them to play a high line if they want to.

It nullfies the pace of the other teams fastest strikers and wingers because it makes the pitch smaller and forces teams to play through the midfield.

Spain basically held both France and Argentina to crumbs. The best I recall Argentina having was Simeone from the corner with about one minute left. Dembele, Messi, Olise and Mbappe starved of ball and opportunities.

They've always been scum. Brazil were the kings of the beautiful game, Argentina the kings of the dark arts when I was a kid

Have they ever done just a golden goal with no penalty shootout in a WC? I.E. the game just goes until some scores? I was trying to work it out via Google AI, it looks like they've only ever had a 30 minute period of golden goal and then still penalties after that (penalty shoot-outs were introduced in 1982, before then it was decided by a coin toss lol). I wonder if that is worth trying as I can't see Argentina being as defensive as they were if they knew there was no penalty shoot-out to steal a win from. Could open the game up - how long could a game last for really with fatigue etc? Could get really epic as teams go shot for shot trying to end the game before they run out of gas completely.

@No-Quarter When they tried golden goal it just ended extra time early - still had the penalty shootout at the end of regulation extra time. According to my search teams tended to play more conservatively in extra time due to the higher stakes. As a person who doesn't follow football except for world cups - so take this for what it's worth - they should do what ice hockey does in extra time remove players to open the game up.

France won euro 2000 on a golden goal, but I think that was an exception and as previously said, golden goal just had the opposite effect to what was intended.

I’ve banged on before about changing the way penalties are done, so won’t again (for awhile at least).

But imagine if the argies took it to penalties and won.

Spain won it by making tournament football look like a technical drill: suffocating possession, a keeper sweeping behind the high line, and one goal conceded in eight games. Rodri ran the traffic, 19-year-old Cubarsí looked absurdly composed, and the whole side mattered more than any superstar. Argentina supplied the niggle and theatre; Spain supplied the football. Young enough to do it all again, too. Annoying bastards.

Ah yes. Not sure an unlimited ET would encourage teams to take risks, and a TV scheduling nightmare. There's a reason why grand slam tennis tournaments abandoned advantage sets

It's crazy to think that back in the day European cup ties that ended in a draw were decided by a coin toss.

In the 60s Chelsea played ac milan and at the end of the match Chelsea went through by winning the coin toss. How anticlimatic.
