if you wanted the team playing the best brand of football to win, that was france

and what happened to them; they got blown off the park by trying to play against the shite that the spanish have been dishing up for a couple of decades
did argentina try that and get blown off the park?
nope, they fought it right out; just as I anticipated
good on them
gutz effort

lot of AB supporters on this forum
they've played beautiful rugby for decades; how many world championships have they bombed out in, lots!

and I expect the RWC final in years time to be the same sort of shite sport spectacle
it'll be bombs away
rush defence
scrumming for penalties
scrumming to get yellow cards
trying to get players red carded
endlees TMO
it'll be absolute shite rugby
just like today we had shite soccer

fucking naive to be expecting anything else in a WC final

Spains ball retention is outrageous.

It has looked easy/boring for decades because they have a production line of players of incredible technical ability.
All of whom can receive and turn and scan in heavy traffic.

Put Haaland or Kane up front for them and they would be the best team of all time.

One goal conceded in 8 games too.

It's Floyd Mayweather esque. Hit and dont get hit.

@Jet

I agree - the Argies aren't mugs and they were reduced to kicking and playing for pens for obvious reasons. France have great players but Spain were the better team - I wish the ABs were regarded in the same manner as Spain in footie.

Pau Cubarsi playing centre back aged 19.

He racked up better stats than Cannavaro and Mattias Sammer who both went on to win the Balon Dor.

@Jet average age of the Spanish team is 26
6th youngest team at the tournament
They could easily go back to back
Thought it was a real team effort in the final as opposed to relying on 1 or 2 players

MajorStokes

@sparky or showing what happens when a good manager works with the players he’s got, not what he wants.

@Steven-Harris I think they will struggle to replace Rodri once he loses his legs. He is the key and I think he will probably start to decline in 2 years. Players like him rarely come around, Spain are lucky they've had two in the past twenty years.

Rodri is quality, but Busquets takes him to the cleaners.

Sergio Busquets is the best player of my lifetime, bar Messi.

Watch busquets highlight reels on YouTube.

The guy played football at walking pace. Ive seen more meat on a butchers apron.

But he had eyes in the back of his head.

He also provided one of the best assists of all time here:

Cheating comes to proving

The thing that I love about how Spain play is how their keeper plays off his line to take away long balls over the top and enable them to play a high line if they want to.

It nullfies the pace of the other teams fastest strikers and wingers because it makes the pitch smaller and forces teams to play through the midfield.

Spain basically held both France and Argentina to crumbs. The best I recall Argentina having was Simeone from the corner with about one minute left. Dembele, Messi, Olise and Mbappe starved of ball and opportunities.

They've always been scum. Brazil were the kings of the beautiful game, Argentina the kings of the dark arts when I was a kid

No Quarter

Have they ever done just a golden goal with no penalty shootout in a WC? I.E. the game just goes until some scores? I was trying to work it out via Google AI, it looks like they've only ever had a 30 minute period of golden goal and then still penalties after that (penalty shoot-outs were introduced in 1982, before then it was decided by a coin toss lol). I wonder if that is worth trying as I can't see Argentina being as defensive as they were if they knew there was no penalty shoot-out to steal a win from. Could open the game up - how long could a game last for really with fatigue etc? Could get really epic as teams go shot for shot trying to end the game before they run out of gas completely.

MiketheSnow

Still think the best answer is straight to pens

No extra time

@No-Quarter When they tried golden goal it just ended extra time early - still had the penalty shootout at the end of regulation extra time. According to my search teams tended to play more conservatively in extra time due to the higher stakes. As a person who doesn't follow football except for world cups - so take this for what it's worth - they should do what ice hockey does in extra time remove players to open the game up.

El vino did flow, to quote David Brent.

@No-Quarter
France won euro 2000 on a golden goal, but I think that was an exception and as previously said, golden goal just had the opposite effect to what was intended.

I’ve banged on before about changing the way penalties are done, so won’t again (for awhile at least).

But imagine if the argies took it to penalties and won.

No Quarter

@westie_boy the point being there would be no penalties, golden goal would just go until someone ends up scoring without a time limit.

The point is what if they reach the end of the time limit and no one has scored?

An extra time drop off would be good. By the time it reaches 8 v 8 or less it wouldn't take long before someone scores a goal

TSF Bot

Spain won it by making tournament football look like a technical drill: suffocating possession, a keeper sweeping behind the high line, and one goal conceded in eight games. Rodri ran the traffic, 19-year-old Cubarsí looked absurdly composed, and the whole side mattered more than any superstar. Argentina supplied the niggle and theatre; Spain supplied the football. Young enough to do it all again, too. Annoying bastards.

Ah yes. Not sure an unlimited ET would encourage teams to take risks, and a TV scheduling nightmare. There's a reason why grand slam tennis tournaments abandoned advantage sets

No Quarter

You could do 15 minute windows, and after each 15 minutes each team has to sub one player of their choice off the field (I like that idea @garyv2). Once it gets to 10 v 10 or 9 v 9 a goal is going to get scored, and overall it'd probably still take less time then all the fucking around with a penalty shoot-out. Lesser teams playing super defensive trying to steal a win in the shoot-out in knock out games is making the game a bore - we want to encourage teams to play like England and France did in the bronze medal match!

nonpartizan

It's crazy to think that back in the day European cup ties that ended in a draw were decided by a coin toss.

In the 60s Chelsea played ac milan and at the end of the match Chelsea went through by winning the coin toss. How anticlimatic.
