Re last nights game i suspect the sky figures will tell you Last nights rugby I reckon out did the Nz Warriors game by 5-1 ratio

There were some really silly figures from WR previously which were laughable, but the media growth has been huge in the last 10 years or so and it's now certainly in the top 3 or 4

Considering it was a sell out, it was always going to be more. And the test match tickets were a lot more expensive than the Wahs, one guy I know sat right up top and still paid over $200 a ticket

As union fans, it's not in our best interest for league and the Wahs to do well. They're already a threat to rugby, and this new TV deal means their clubs will raid our junior ranks even more than they do now. I might be in the minority, but I hope the Wahs start losing.

They don't raid our junior ranks as much as the media tells you, or at least the players don't choose to go as much as the media tells you. The media hangs on to stories of the Warriors junior teams stealing from rugby, and they're mostly just league kids at rugby schools because our schools are all league schools. Or they hype a guy who can't get a start for Ta$man as the best young rugby player in NZ gone to league.

I don't like soccer, lots of kids play soccer in NZ, but I still want our soccer teams to do well.

I hope the Wahs do well because I’ve been a long suffering fan since they started.

As a rugby fan, the way I see it is that some public pressure (not the OTT talking head hot takes) when the Wahs are doing well can be a good thing to keep rugby administrators and organisations on their toes, to keep them evolving in how the game is governed etc. If league or basketball or soccer success can influence that, then that’s a good thing for rugby.

I think it is the likes of B-ball that is a bigger threat, well along with kids playing no sport at all.

I mentioned elsewhere, there are not alot of.tall players running around Northland club rugby, but i do know alot of kids play B-ball and there seems.good development programmes, with tournaments and kids going on trips overseas (parents doing alot of fundraising)

Didn't we already discuss this in another thread and come to a conclusion that basketball numbers are a bit of a myth relying on short term tournaments rather than season long commitment numbers. Much like a lot of the league numbers are based on a week long tournament at the end of the season.

@taniwharugby height is an issue in Auckland as well there’s not a lot around
However it’s a hell of lot easier to find 13 plus 4 reserves that run,pass and tackle in league as opposed to 15 plus 7 reserves with 4 specialists props,2 x hookers ,2 halfbacks and 3 and half locks and decent back up 10 and a utility that covers 12 out to 15
Props also massive gap not a lot of quality around

Agreed, but I was just pointing out that there are avenues for "rugby" socially, just as not all kids playing basketball play for their school. My short arse played a lot of two on two and I've never played a competitive game of basketball in my life.

True - but I'd say 2x2 basketball is a lot closer to a real game of basketball than 2x2 forceback is to rugby.

I think it is maybe a "threat" in terms of participation, much less so as a spectator sport.

Pre-covid the NZ Breakers were quite popular in Auckland, now you'd hardly even know they exist. I'd suggest that in Auckland there is a fair degree of crossover between NRL fans and basketball fans, and the rise of the former might have dampened interest in the latter (purely anecdotal and I understand that this is contradicted by evidence from Australia, where the NBL has grown a lot over the last few years).

Likewise the NZ NBL attracts only a few hundred spectators to most games.

Participation definitely isn't filtering through to spectator interest, at least not domestically.

Actually mate, you can play a game of rugby on your own too mate. I lived on a farm as a kid, and played many games by myself . I used to almost always win, and didn't always get all attempted conversions. Actually a kid who lived down the road from us and I used to play 1 on 1 rugby quite a bit too.

I heard them say the other day on Tour of France, that on one hill there was an estimated 500,000 people. Thats a lot of people.

But I admit I don't care how many watch any sports, it's not rugby so who cares!

I have heard a some 3rd hand information that it wasn’t even close with the ABs game attracting a 5-1 audience but would like to cross check this info first unless we have a poster that has access to this information from what I was told even local derby’s during super rugby were out pointing the Warriors games

I was chatting to a friend who follows the Warriors and he said he watches them religiously but only catches the odd game that they aren’t involved with or just catches a highlights package of other games

I personally don’t watch much league it’s simply not my game and doesn’t appeal to me

I do enjoy the EPL and the top golf tournaments

I think that's most Wahs fans. They only really watch the Wahs and Origin.

Despite that, Sky have just paid $50 million a year for the NRL.
