I agree - I think 200 will be too far. But, as you say, here's hoping.

So, I just copied your post. Good for me. I will say if the pitch flattens out, and the openers can see off the hard ball, that 200 is very very gettable. So maybe I am optimistic... will take some disciplined batting for an hour, and then it'll be game on for Ireland.

Imagine winning your first test in less than 20 odd years of, admittedly war-interrupted, trying.

It took us:
20 years to win our first test.
30 years to win our first away test.
45 years to win our first test v England.
50 years to win our first test in England.
66 years to win our first test at Lords.

It also tookmus until after the 1973 series in England to get 5 day tests out of the MCC when playing them

Bit of rain produced a wicket that favoured the ball. Always going to be tough as it went on and Root had a go at the surface after the game

Yep that's Hadlee standard and remember Steyn played when anything under 30 is pretty outstanding.

Interesting he's given up the longest form, great ODI stats but it's as a test bowler he really shines.

Agreed.
But his body just can't deal with the volume required in tests anymore.
Even an ODI feels a stretch. Suspect he will gravitate to T20's.

Interesting fact given that injuries are now haunting him - he was one of the least injured bowlers early on in his career. It has really only been the last 3-4 years that father time has come to claim its dues.

Out of interest, I thought I'd do a comparison of Hadlee (left) and Steyn (right).

Shows just how much work Hadlee got through in his career - 7 matches less (86 vs 93), but bowled around 2,400 more deliveries than Steyn.

Bowling has a lot of similarities, but Hadlee was 3x the batsmen (literally).

Was a pleasure to watch Steyn, one of the few fast bowlers I went out of my way to watch. Quality for ages, and a dead set legend.

pains me to say it but Steyn may have been better. The argument can be made.....

In Hadlees favour is 36 michelles vs 26 which indicates he bowled more singular match changing spells. Batting is no comparison obviously but I still wouldn't call Sir RJ a true all rounder.

In Steyns favour is the era he played being much friendlier for batsman yet he still averaged only a smidgen under Paddles. Also a strike rate of 42 vs 50 speaks for itself too.

In Sir RJs favour is that his averages are probably not benefitting with games against Zimbabwe and Bangledesh.

Almost impossible to compare players from different eras and make a case for one being better than the other imo.
Hadlee was one of those once-in-a-lifetime kind of cricketers. Certainly one of my favourite picks for an alltime XI.

But Steyn, on song - particularly when he would angle it at leg stump and swing it to hit top of off-stump - was probably more enjoyable to watch - at least for me.

Batsmen didn't have to score off him, just see him off - there was usually a competitor at the other end. Hadlee's bowling partners, on the other hand, weren't exactly scary (much though we loved them)

Some international coaching news:

Pakistan have sacked - or rather declined to renew - the coaching contract of Mickey Arthur and all his staff.
Arthur is said to be on the shortlist as a candidate to replace Bayliss at England after the Ashes series...

And Otis Gibson and all his staff got the sack in SA.
No immediate replacement identified but apparantly Criscket SA will now be appointing more of a Football-type " Manager".

So of the "big 4" who is most likely to pass Tendulkar's record of 51 test tons.

Smith is 30 and has 25 - tests to pass Sachin at current rate = 141 (76 more)
Kohli is 30 and has 25 - 157 (80 more)
Williamson is 29 and has 20 - 184 (112 more)
Root is 28 and has 16 - 262 (180 more)

So Root is youngest and plays the most tests per year but also has the worst conversion rate so would need to improve this a lot. Kane is probably least likely as NZ play so few tests and would have to play past 40.

Kohli will do it i reckon. He's already a better player than Tendulkar, would love for him to have the record to prove it.

Smith might as well, i just wonder if his "technique" will hold up as he ages

Smith won't do it, with his "technique" as soon as his hand eye coordination drops a tiny bit at age 33ish, his form will drop off a cliff. I reckon may not even be playing tests by age 35. There's zero room for error with the way he plays.

He's a better ODI player in which he is a freak but as a test player he's about even so far.

A few years back there was a real tussle to see who the best was out of this "big four" and I think the order you've listed is about right.

First two, enough said, all time greats of any era.

Our Kane, far and away our best ever test batsman with years to compile an even better record. May end up our best ever cricketer......a big "if".....

Root, average has dipped to under 49.....still excellent but getting to the point where he isn't worthy enough to be in this discussion......

The 1 was a 10 wicket win chasing 250 odd. That's a humiliation, doubly so at home. India bounced back well though.

SA England test 4 starts tonight. England ahead 2-1 after losing the first - should be quite tasty. Hopefully SA get up. Coudl be the last tests for Philander and DuPlessis.
