Black Caps v Pakistan

Was cool to see captain Bracewell send Abbas in ahead of him

Abbas is good to watch

yep, nice swagger about him. Looks very exciting and confident. His innings was vital in getting over 300 given others failed.

Bugger that he holed out on 52 and didn't end up 58 not out but he still looked pretty pleased with his efforts.

His Dad looked a pretty useful bowler at FC level in pakistan ( thanks cricinfo, looked unlucky not to get a call up for Pakistan )

Cyclops

That's a phenomenal total given our rocky start. I'm always nervous after a score like that that we squandered good conditions early, but we'll find out soon.

I should go look at Chapman's split Vs Pakistan and everyone else, it feels like all his runs come against them.

Average of 41 vs them vs 39 everyone else.

first big score against them, nothing over 50 prior to this.

Cyclops

@MN5

Difference of 14 (27 vs 41) in T20 though, that must be where I got the idea.

MN5

Handy start from Pakistan which they needed. 56 for none.

Yeah, he absolutely loves playing T20 against and at their home grounds too!

KiwiMurph

At this stage of his career Abbas looks like a player who can give you a small number of overs bowling in limited overs formats rather than a genuine allrounder

So according to BC selectors a fully fledged all rounder then

Cyclops

Yeah I feel like we're in more trouble than it looks on the scorecard, since Abbas (or another part timer) has to bowl about a quarter of the remaining overs.

I don't know what the selectors are thinking - maybe he bowled more in the one day or plunket shield, but when I watched him play T20 his bowling was very much handy 6th option rather than core bowler.

Babar Azam has an extraordinary record in this form of the game. Getting him is key. Bowling options are looking a bit light.

MN5

All over, Pakistan all out for 271.

Better than I thought they'd get. Should encourage them to be competitive for the next couple of games.

Virgil

Fuck i gotta stop checking the score on cricinfo, been in twice and each time we lost a wicket.

can someone else take a look please...

95/2 after 14

Nicholls 19*
Good Mitch 16*

Virgil

@canefan cheers, makes sense now.
Son Mitch = Great
Dad Mitch = Cockwomble who didn't pick CC for the 2003 RWC

some reason i was assuming Bad Mitch was Satnav (who i know the fern loves very much)

Satnav was not liked, but after his heroics in India he is reborn

Canes4life

BCs now 102/4 off 17 overs. Bracewell and Abbas will need to form a partnership here to ensure we aren't bowled out for a miserable total.

MN5

Abbas finding out about the highs and lows of cricket at this level.

What a contrast from a few days ago.

Not a huge amount of batting in the shed. Important partnership !

Based on our start he couldn't really go hard. Giving his wicket away cheaply would have been a silly move. He's got runs on the board which at this stage of the game, is most important.

Yeah I think that's exactly what I meant, you may have worded it better.

The score still looks far too 1980s at the moment, time for them to have a swing.

Also, who is Rhys Mariu ?

young batter, possibly our future Test opener.

Good innings from Mitch Hay here, critical he keeps going

I love the interview where Son Mitch said he was furious and refused to speak to Dad Mitch after he left CC out of the squad. Great that he even copped it from his own son for that.

99 not out. Bugger !

Nice recovery from a bad position though. A more than defendable total

Just on the confusing Mitch situation, Santner is THE greatest one that's ever lived after his efforts in the test series in India.

You could combine Starc, Johnson and Marsh across the ditch and they wouldn't be close.

MN5

27/3 !

Babar Azam gone too.

Looking decent so far

No Quarter

Rizwan is in all sorts of trouble against O'Rourke, starting to fear for his safety.

No Quarter

Bloody hell just put the poor bloke out of his misery before he gets hurt. An in swinging yorker should do the job.

No Quarter

Sears reaping the rewards, both Salman and Rizwan hole out. This is a real hiding so far, Pakistan will be wishing this was the last ODI.

Yeah they gave the BCs a bit of a scare last time out but this is a hiding, they will be lucky to get 100

Look he's a great player, but I can't be alone in thinking Caleb Clarke was a bit raw still in '03?

Huh? What happened?

SouthernMann

In other Black Caps news. South African white ball coach Rob Walter has resigned. Citing the travel stress of having to go between NZ and South Africa.

Stead's contract is up in June. Potentially a ready made replacement for the white ball teams. Hos record was alright, however he barely had his best team apart from major tournaments when South Africa quite well.

Couple of statistical oddities from last nights win
Hay's 99* is the first from a Black Cap in an ODI since Bruce Edgars waaay back in 1981

And i wonder how often would all 10 wickets fall caught behind the wicket in an ODI the way Pakistan's did last night?

Cyclops

Hay now has a 49 and a 99 in only 4 innings.

I’m amazed Edgar scored quick enough to even get to 99 after 50 overs

in 5th place was ole Brucie

It wasn't necessarily a dig, Edgar came and spoke to us at school once, awesome bloke. I loved the fact a guy from Wellington played for NZ and took the time to see us kids.

Different times but as as Jeff Thomson apparently sledged him once he would "never die of a stroke" !

Strike rate of 49 in ODIs.

I'm also REALLY surprised KW, Taylor and Crowe aren't on that list.
