I wonder when the Aussies last had to play a dead rubber where they hadn't qualified the next stage.

Had a quick look, one instance looked to be the ODI WC in 1992
They missed out on getting out of the group stage even before playing their last game against the Windies

I was at Lancaster Park watching NZ lose to Pakistan in our last pool game. We had to win for Australia to still have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the play-offs, so once it became obvious we were going to lose, the crowd started chanting "Goodbye to Aussie", eventually followed by "Aussies are w__kers" as our creativity shone through...

I don't remember us losing to Pakistan in the pool. I can't forget us losing to them in the SF 😔

Looking forward to game later, lucky that this week I’m in the right Timezone for it. Tariq will be an interesting proposition for us since we haven’t faced this mutant yet

We lost to them two games in a row!

I remember there being discussion that we should throw the pool game against Pakistan to knock out the Aussies, pretty sure we didn't throw that pool game though.

I remember thinking we could win the SF until Martin Crowe went down, and Inzamam Ul Haq took the game away from us

@canefan

Still not over that. Tears on the terraces.
Lord’s 2019 did not help.
Avoiding all future WC semis/finals. Unless selected to play 🤞🏽

bayimports

Mike Hesson coached Pakistan … surely the fall guy if NZ get up . Getting close to kick off not sure if we get Ferguson back yet

bayimports

Just reading square under cover although not much rain about hopefully no delays

bayimports

No problems with square toss incoming Pakistan win soggy biscuit and bat first

bayimports

There is some light drizzle

bayimports

Rain delay but unknown how long

Bones

Saturday afternoon fucking ruined, now I have to watch England and Norwich.

bayimports

Sooo rain still heavy and if we do start we start losing overs

Guessing that doesn't really play into our hands with our inability to get wickets?

I’m guessing washout preferred now taking a point against Pakistan in this group could still be useful

bayimports

Match officially abandoned

bayimports

So if NZ make the semis, Aus do not have direct access to 2028 Olympics and have to qualify via a tournament based on rankings. Surely that’s an incentive in itself

Chris B.

Well, my opinion of T20 is that it's a bit of a crapshoot.

Sharing points with Pakistan means that the pool becomes more of a crapshoot.

That works against us if you think we're one of the stronger teams in the pool (and especially if you think we're better than Pakistan) and for us if you think we're weaker.

Given that all four second placed teams are in our pool, I'm inclined to think we'd have been better to reduce the crapshoot element by playing all our games.

vs England will be a crapshoot, though Nepal nearly beat them.

Zimbabwe beat SL and both beat Oz.

Roll them dice!

bayimports

England with a slow start, Sri Lanka in advantage here

canefan

I don't think the change of venue does us any favours. If we manage to emerge from the group I assume we have to go back to India

bayimports

After the super eight all games in India unless Pakistan needs to play

bayimports

Assuming Lanka finish this well only needing 147, then that sets the standard in our group. New Zealand would also need to dispatch England to ensure run rate good enough

bayimports

Is there a twist? England coming back from the dead ..game on

bayimports

Sri Lanka might struggle from here even though plenty of time to go… this would make super eights interesting if this continues. Still lots of time left in this one

bayimports

56/6 after 10 chasing 147 to win. Sri Lanka now on the ropes

bayimports

In a pool where run rate will mean everything, England take deserving points but Sri Lanka’s run rate in that rout will take a hit.. well done England @chris-b. truly a crapshoot now

Virgil

India pumped by SA in their Super 8 game
Could only reach 111 in pursuit of 188

SouthernMann

Stoked to see India lose.

OomPB

Proteas hit form to early. Ready to choke now.

The worst part is if you do, you look like the most balanced team competing.

Bovidae

England beating Pakistan is a good result for us. The game tonight against SL likely determines if we get to the SFs. A win eliminates SL and a positive NRR would help too before the last game.

bayimports

We lose the toss again and bat

bayimports

Siefert dropped hopefully he gives them the brook treatment

bayimports

Danger man Allen out 30/1

bayimports

Siefert goone 34/2
Maybe posting is causing wickets will check score at end of innings lol

Bones

Were they in the nets with a different coloured ball? Chapman and Mitchell were bloody miles away.
