I don’t get the feeling there is anything that has transpired other than it’s his time. Naturally people will ask because he’s our most successful test batsman, a captain etc and there would usually be more noise about something like this, but he’s never been a “it’s about me”!character (and I do not begrudge pro athletes that have that sort of mentality either).

I'll admit, I'll be a little sour on him not hanging in there over the last year or so (the Zimbabwe tour etc) to be the first and probably only Kiwi to 10,000 test runs. But that will fade...

Daryl Mitchell also hasn't got a test ton in over three years.
Illustrates the point though, I don't think he was about to be dropped mid series.
Kane's always marched to the beat of a slightly different drum - recalling his reaction to not winning the CWC vs England.
His interview sounds very much like he's realised he's not 100 percent committed to the team so not going to waste a single innings on his own personal milestones - but, get out and give someone else the opportunity to develop/succeed.
Very Kane-like.

At least Conway gave some blood sweat and tears in his second innings at Lord's, which is more than a lot of the others can say. He's clearly not at his best, he tried to tough it out and unfortunately got out just as it looked like he might have steadied the ship somewhat

Now that the dust has settled does the question need to be asked......
Did he do enough to usurp Paddles as our best ever ?
For me, no.
I never imagined a Black Cap would cross that magic 50 average, let alone 54.06 over 110 goddamn test matches. It's world class.
Just for reference that average places him above Tendulkar, Root, Ponting, Dravid, Lara, Border, S Waugh, Gavaskar, Miandad, Richards.....guys who played in and around that number of matches give or take.
2nd to Steve Smith and ahead of Root and Kohli in terms of the other "fab four".
7256 ODI runs at 48.69. Bloody hell that's a fantastic record !
There's always the niggling feeling ( especially on sub continent forums ) that he minnow bashed in New Zealand ( a staggering 65.76 at home vs a still very good 40.95 away ) so there is some truth in what they say.......but lots of players have records that sway that way.
No matter how many runs someone might score a team still needs to take wickets to win matches......
No one did that better for NZ than Paddles, especially during the 80s after a bit of an ironing out period the decade before. Paddles pretty much kicked arse everywhere ( actually slightly better away average of 21.72 vs 22.96 at home )
He didn't get to play Bangladesh, Ireland or Zimbabwe.
KW was surrounded by different degrees of very good cricketers in his career ( albeit no one who challenged him as the teams best player )
Paddles had a supporting cast of some pretty bog standard test players in comparison. Cult heroes for sure but overall not in the class of KWs teammates. Paddles carried the fortunes of NZ cricket pretty much on his own when he played.
Paddles was the first man to 400 test wickets.
Paddles was a better batsman than KW was a bowler.
To sum up, the two best players NZ have produced by quite a margin ( Martin Crowe sits third ), but to me there's a very distinct one and two.
God I wish they had played in the same era !
Our best batsman without question, and a record bar none. An odd way to finish his career however which is a little dissapointing as it overshadows his retirement a little. He deserved a better send off, timing and results-wise.

He does, but I really think he doesn't care about that stuff - or the 10k milestone. In my head he just figured he wasn't at his best, the passion to work to get back there wasn't there so he thought better to step aside and let someone else build. In fairness looking at the season the sooner we get people in the fold the better.

Hadlee had a few books most if not all are on my bookshelf somewhere......I do remember him writing a column in the paper cos some players were late for morning warm ups ? that didn't go down too well, neither did the car situation.
There was also that huge bust up with Jeremy Coney.
Hadlee in interviews seems like he has really dry wit, a definite sense of humour but yeah, privately he might have wondered if some of his teammates were worth sharing a pitch with !
Hadlee said somewhere he did so well partly and indubitably because of Chats down the other end being such a frustrating bowler.
Me, I liked Lance Cairns. More for his performative dance bowling than for the actual stats.
Speaking of Paddles and Chats, was their birthday yesterday.
Hadlee's first book (Rhythm and Swing) specifically calls out Chats as being a great bowler and essential to Hadlee's success.
